"A Valley Divided" explores the ways in which the Latino community in Eastern Washington is finding its voice and demanding equal representation at the ballot box. The new documentary, directed by Madeline Gunderson, reveals the entrenchment of decades of political discrimination and holds up a mirror to the larger story of a changing United States.
Ben Givens (Tom Skerritt) is a retired heart surgeon and recent widower who learns he has terminal cancer. Determined to navigate his final days on his own terms, he shares the news with no one—not even his daughter (Mira Sorvino)—instead traveling back to his boyhood home in Eastern Washington with only his dog in tow. But the journey does not go as planned; the familiar landscape triggers memories and a connection with a kind stranger (Annie Gonzalez) inspires new insight. Based on David Guterson's best-selling novel and unfolding against the scenic vistas of the Columbia Basin, this compelling character study offers a long-overdue showcase for one of cinema’s greatest treasures.
Incorporating exuberant dance sequences, and featuring a pair of principal characters played by four different actors daringly expressing both masculine and feminine sides, "Aviva," directed by Boaz Yakin ("Remember the Titans"), is cutting edge cinema which captures a restless and changing world where who we are as women and men, and how we navigate the world, is up for grabs.
Narrated and featuring Woody Harrelson, Kiss the Ground is an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis. Kiss the Ground reveals that, by regenerating the world’s soils, we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle.
In 1993, the voters of Washington State allowed a law to pass that sent children to prison for life as “irredeemable”. What has this legacy of captivity done to them, and to their communities?
Since I Been Down is told by the people who have lived these conditions, unravels intimate stories from interviews brought to life through archival footage, cinema verité discussions, masquerade, and dance, unravelling why children commit violent crime and how these children – now adults – are breaking free from their fate by creating a model of justice that is transforming their lives, our humanity and a quality of life for all our children. Free admission.
