Live Cinema: "The Sleeping Beauty" - Royal Ballet

Press Release: Live Cinema – “The Sleeping Beauty” – April 12

April 3, 2017 – A Live Cinema version of “The Sleeping Beauty” by the Royal Ballet in London will be screened at Gesa Power House Theatre on Wednesday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m.

Gesa Power House Theatre recently launched a new Live Cinema series featuring current productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Ballet, and Royal Opera. Direct from England, these productions are filmed live and rebroadcast internationally to select screens.

“The Sleeping Beauty” is a perennial audience favorite featuring an enchanted world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magical spells. This production combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers.

First choreographed to Tchaikovsky’s musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, “The Sleeping Beauty” has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess.

“The Sleeping Beauty” holds a special place in the Royal Ballet’s repertory as it was the first production performed by the Royal Ballet when the Royal Opera House re-opened after World War II. The landmark staging was revived for the Company’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2006.

The designs by Oliver Messell, one of the greatest stage designers of the 20th century, were restored and updated for this production by Peter Farmer. The rich evocations of the baroque opulence of a royal court, the panoramic journey of the prince to the overgrown castle and the colorful characters in this famous fairy tale make this Sleeping Beauty a spectacle like no other.

Two principals of the Royal Ballet, Argentine dancer Marianela Nuñez and Russian dancer Vadim Muntagirov perform the roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund.

“The Sleeping Beauty” runs about 3 hours, including two intermissions and a 15-minute introduction.

Reserved seating tickets ($15 Adults, $10 Students) are available online (www.phtww.org ) or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

About the Gesa Power House Theatre

The historic Gesa Power House Theatre is a world-class, 300-seat performing arts venue, located in downtown Walla Walla. The 120-year-old building was once the Walla Walla Gas Plant, built to produce coal gas used to light the streets, businesses, and homes of Walla Walla. In 2011 the Gesa Power House Theatre building was transformed into a state-of-the-art playhouse for live performance. The interior design of the theatre was inspired by Shakespeare’s own intimate Blackfriars Theatre in London, England.

The Gesa Power House Theatre is on the Washington State Building Preservation Commission list of State historic buildings and on the National Register of Historic Places. The venue also hosts a variety of other cultural events, musical concerts, and private events (including weddings).
