Press Release: Auditions for Cabaret – June 5

Gesa Power House Theatre announces auditions for “Cabaret” on Monday, June 5. The musical will be directed by Tyson Kaup (who recently directed and starred in “Rocky Horror Show” and “Last Five Years” fame), with performances August 18-20, 25-27.

“Cabaret” is a musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff. The original production, starring Joel Grey as the emcee, debuted on Broadway in 1966, and has been revived on Broadway and London’s West End numerous times. Joel Grey also starred in the 1972 film adaptation with Liza Minnelli.

Auditions for “Cabaret” will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre from 6pm to 10pm. Actors should prepare a short song, plus may be asked for a cold reading or some basic stage movement. Callbacks will be scheduled for Tuesday, June 6 between 6pm and 10pm. Additional auditions will be held in Seattle on June 3 by appointment.

All performers will be paid a non-equity stipend relative to the size of the role.The following acting roles are available:

EMCEE: MALE \ 20’s to 30’s \ German (accent) \ Actor \ Singer \ Dancer
Host of the Kit Kat Club. Sexually charged and charismatic performer with stamina and athletic ability. [housing provided if needed, must be able to travel if not local]

SALLY BOWLES: FEMALE \ 20’s \ English Accent \ Dancer \ Singer \ Actor
Actress with big dreams. Sexy and charismatic. She drinks and smokes. She is vulnerable and unhinged at times. She has no filter and her every gesture betrays her emotional fragility. Must be willing to stage kiss. [housing provided if needed, must be able to travel if not local]

CLIFF: MALE \ 20’s \ American \ Actor \ Singer
Romantic lead. Novelist with an apparent curiosity about the world around him. He is reluctantly adventurous and somewhat naive. We see the world of Cabaret through his eyes. Must be willing to stage kiss.

ERNST: MALE \ 20’s \ German (accent) \ Actor \ Singer
Charismatic people person. A confident and unapologetic Nazi sympathizer.

HERR SCHULTZ: MALE \ 45+ \ German – Jew (accent) \ Actor \ Singer
Older romantic supporting role, with a wide range of emotion. A German Jew, who owns a flower shop. Some light stage combat. Must be willing to stage kiss.

MAX: MALE \ 40 and over \ German (accent) \ Actor
Owner of the Kit Kat Club. Controlling and insensitive. Cares about the bottom line. Very little singing or dancing, although, the role may be doubled with one of the Kit Kat Boys.

FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER: Female \ 45+ \ German (accent) Actor \ Singer
Landlady with a strong exterior and warm heart. Teasing and reluctantly romantic with Her Shultz. She has seen it all, and has a very strong point of view about it all. Must be willing to stage kiss.

FRAULEIN KOST: Female \ 30+ \ German (accent) \ Actor \ Singer
Sexually aggressive and coy. Nazi sympathizer, and a tenant to Fraulein Schneider. Must be willing to stage kiss multiple people.

KIT KAT BOYS: 4 MALE \ Victor \ Bobby \ 20’s – 30’s \ Dancers Performers at the Kit Kat Club. Must be athletic and willing to push physical boundaries. May be asked to perform in drag.

KIT KAT GIRLS: 6 FEMALE \Texas (American) \ Rosie (English) Frenchie (French) \ Helga (German) \ Lulu \ Fritzie Females \ 20’s to 30’s \ Various (accents) \ Dancers
Performers at the Kit Kat Club. Strong female ensemble members with the ability to work as a group. Must be willing to be physically bold. May be asked to perform in drag.

Performers of all ethnic and racial background are encouraged to attend.

About the Gesa Power House Theatre

The historic Gesa Power House Theatre is a world-class, 300-seat performing arts venue, located in downtown Walla Walla. The 120-year-old building was once the Walla Walla Gas Plant, built to produce coal gas used to light the streets, businesses, and homes of Walla Walla. In 2011 the Gesa Power House Theatre building was transformed into a state-of-the-art playhouse for live performance.
