Giuseppe Verdi’s thrilling Rigoletto pits power against innocence, beauty against ugliness. In his first work as Director of The Royal Opera, Oliver Mears sets this production in a pitiless world of luxurious decadence, corruption and social decay, bringing Verdi’s masterpiece into the modern world. This special anniversary screening (filmed in September 2021) is conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano and celebrates 171 years since its premiere in 1851.
Carlos Álvarez performs the title role of the jester Rigoletto alongside Lisette Oropesa as Gilda and Liparit Avetisyan as the Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto is sung in Italian with English subtitles.
Filmed during a live event, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. The Live Cinema Series is sponsored in part by Shakespeare Walla Walla.
This screening has an approximate runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes, including an on-screen introduction and one intermission. Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks will be available for purchase, and may be taken into the theater.
Reserved seating tickets ($15 adults, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. If you want to purchase 4 or more titles in the Live Cinema series together and save 10%, please call the box office at 509-529-6500 (offer not available online).
