SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Swan Lake" - Royal Ballet (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a rescheduled screening of the current Royal Ballet production of Swan Lake on Wednesday\, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to the Walla Walla Symphony. \n \nSwan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This Season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text\, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet\, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane. \nThe cast for this production includes: \nODETTE – Marianela Nuñez\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED – Vadim Muntagirov\nVON ROTHBART – Bennet Gartside\nTHE QUEEN – Elizabeth McGorian\nBENNO – Alexander Campbell\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED’S YOUNGER SISTERS – Akane Takada\, Francesca Hayward \nPrince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman\, Odette\, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive\, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. \nSwan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet score. Given its status today as arguably one of the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets\, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime\, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky’s score\, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa’s royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov. \nThe Live Cinema Series features productions by The Royal Ballet\, The Royal Opera\, and The Royal Shakespeare Company\, filmed live in England\, and rebroadcast to select theaters. \nRuntime: approximately 3 hours 25 minutes including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales\, please call 509-876-1662. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook. \n \nAbout the Walla Walla Symphony:\nThe Walla Walla Symphony delights and challenges our community by providing live orchestral performances and opportunities for learning about music. Learn more at www.wwsymphony.org. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? Become a Gesa Power House Theatre Member (highest priority) or sign up for our e-mail list! \n\nThe 2018 Live Cinema Series is sponsored by Shakespeare Walla Walla\, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that aims to make Shakespeare and theater approachable and entertaining to students in eastern Washington and Oregon.

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents Every Brilliant Thing starring Kevin Loomer and directed by Nancy Simon\, with performances Friday\, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday\, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go towards local suicide prevention efforts. \nEvery Brilliant Thing is a one-actor play\, adapted by playwright Duncan McMillan from his own short story “Sleeve Notes”. British comedian Jonny Donahue\, who originated the role\, shares in the writing credit. The play’s title refers to a list – of everything wonderful in the world – that the narrator writes in response to his mother attempting suicide. He starts the list at age seven with items like “ice cream” and “staying up past your bedtime\,” and as the narrator grows older\, the list grows longer. \nThe play’s story spans nearly three decades and several life-changing events\, evoking laughter and tears in equal measure. The play has received critical acclaim in London\, Edinburgh\, and Off-Broadway in New York City. \n“It’s the funniest play you’re ever likely to see about depression\, and also the most moving” – British Theatre Guide \nEvery Brilliant Thing invites some audience participation\, primarily through asking people to read a few words aloud during the performance from slips of paper they are given as they enter the theater. A few audience members are incorporated into scenes\, with the actor doing most of the heavy lifting. The play will be performed “in the round” with on-stage seating. \n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Loomer is a familiar face on Walla Walla’s many stages – under the spotlight and behind the scenes. He performed this role on the Gesa Power House Theatre stage last September\, and is active in local theater productions\, including at The Little Theatre of Walla Walla. Kevin is the Director of Theatre Arts at Walla Walla Community College.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Nancy Simon is Professor Emerita at Whitman College where she taught theater classes and directed at Harper Joy Theatre for nearly 50 years. Following her retirement\, she remains active in the local theater scene. She recently directed Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery at The Little Theatre of Walla Walla.\n\n\n\nNon-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($20 Adults; $15 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n \n$1/ticket will be donated to Reach Out\, whose mission is to focus on breaking down the barriers to suicide intervention\, promoting resiliency\, encouraging and facilitating help-seeking\, inspiring our local community to take a personal stake in suicide prevention\, and educating the public on guidelines for engagement\, intervention\, and help-seeking in moments of crisis. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook! \nSee also: Suicide: The Ripple Effect (documentary film) \nThis event is held in honor of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
