SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Rigoletto" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current production of Rigoletto by The Royal Opera on Wednesday\, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThe corruption of innocence is at the heart of Giuseppe Verdi’s potent tragedy in David McVicar’s production for The Royal Opera. \nThe opera’s story follows Rigoletto\, the hunchbacked court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua\, who is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s latest conquests for his mocking laughter. When the Duke turns his attention to Rigoletto’s own daughter Gilda\, it seems the curse is taking effect\, and the jester must plot to protect her from the Duke’s immoral intent. \nDavid McVicar’s production highlights the cruelty at the heart of the court of Mantua. Richly dressed courtiers engage in orgies and revelries to Verdi’s heady\, spirited dances. The opera’s many musical highlights include the ebullient “La donna è mobile”\, in which the Duke boasts of his disregard for women; Gilda’s exquisite\, plangent duets with Rigoletto and the Duke; and the gorgeous Act III quartet that beautifully weaves the voices together as the story quickens to its shattering conclusion. \nAlexander Joel conducts a cast led by Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias in the title role and featuring American tenor Michael Fabiano as the Duke of Mantua\, alongside English soprano Lucy Crowe as Gilda. \nGiuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his “best opera”. He had to overcome state censorship to stage it – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere’s huge success in 1851. Rigoletto was performed 250 times in the next 10 years and has remained one of the most popular of all operas. \nThis screening runs approximately 2 hours 45 minutes including one interval and an onscreen introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nNOTE: Rigoletto is sung in Italian with English surtitles. Contains some nudity and scenes of a sexual nature. Recommended for ages 18 and up. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. RSVP on Facebook \nSpecial limited time offer: Purchase tickets to all twelve 2018 Live Cinema Series screenings together and save 33%! \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Documentary Film: "Big Sonia"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the documentary film “Big Sonia” on International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, Saturday\, January 27\, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Representatives from Congregation Beth Israel of Walla Walla (Pat Henry\, Richard Middleton-Kaplan\, James Winchell) will introduce the film and host a short Q&A discussion following the screening. \n \nBig Sonia Festival Teaser from Inflatable Film on Vimeo. \nStanding tall at 4’8″\, Sonia is one of the last remaining Holocaust survivors in Kansas City and one of the only survivors there who speaks publicly about her wartime experience. Sonia’s enormous personality and fragile frame mask the horrors she endured. At 15 she watched her mother disappear behind gas chamber doors. Sonia’s teenage years were a blur of concentration camps and death marches. On liberation day\, she was accidentally shot through the chest\, yet again miraculously survived. Sonia is the ultimate survivor\, a bridge between cultures and generations. Her story must never be forgotten. \nFor years\, Sonia Warshawski (91) has been an inspirational public speaker at schools and prisons\, where her stories of surviving the Holocaust as a teenager have inspired countless people who once felt their own traumas would leave them broken forever. But when Sonia is served an eviction notice for her iconic tailor shop (in a dead mall)\, she’s confronted with an agonizing decision: either open up a new shop\, or retire. Ironically\, Sonia’s shop is the last open business in an otherwise desolate Kansas City mall\, but it contains enough color and liveliness to make up for the entire empty complex. For a woman who admits she stays busy “to keep the dark parts away”\, facing retirement dredges up fears she’d long forgot she had\, and her horrific past resurfaces. \n“Big Sonia” explores what it means to be a survivor and how inter-generational trauma affects families and generations. Will you let your trauma define you? Or will your past make you stronger? \n“Such a beautiful documentary…an unexpected and vital exploration in a time we need it most. I love Sonia!”\n‐ Rosie O’Donnell \nAwards:\nGrand Jury Prize: Best Documentary\, Barcelona International Film Festival\, 2017\nBest Film / Audience Award\, Cleveland International Film Festival\, 2017\nBest Documentary\, Wilbur Award for Religious Communicators\, 2017\nBest Documentary\, Napa Film Festival\, 2016\nAudience Award\, Napa Film Festival\, 2016\nBest Heartland Documentary\, Kansas City Film Festival\, 2017\nAARP Movies For GrownUps Nominee\, 2017\nBest Documentary / Audience Award\, Monadnock International Film Festival\, 2017\nAudience Award\, Seattle Jewish Film Festival\, 2017\nAudience Award\, Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival\, 2017\nAudience Award\, Mendocino Film Festival\, 2017\nShanghai International Film Festival (only US-‐made doc in competition)\, 2017\nAudience Award\, Berkshire Jewish Film Festival\, 2017\nBest Local Film\, Movie Trip Cinema (Kansas City)\, 2017 \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.\nRSVP on Facebook \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:WWCMF - Winter Festival Series Concert 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival’s Winter Festival Series concert will be performed at Gesa Power House Theatre on Sunday\, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. \nThe January Festival Series explores movement and color through sound with the electronic instrument\, the theremin. Invented in 1920 in Russia and patented in the United States in 1928 by the Soviet inventor\, Léon Theremin\, the instrument that bears his name captures the imagination of all who hear it. Unlike any other musician\, the thereminist does not physically touch the instrument to produce sound but rather moves in relation to the instrument creating a seemingly infinite range of pitches and colors. Thus\, the act of producing sound becomes visually expressive. \nTo introduce the world of theremin music\, WWCMF is honored to welcome one of the world’s foremost theremin virtuosi\, Carolina Eyck. A gifted composer\, Carolina is also a synesthete  — someone who feels a strong link between sound and color. In her compositions\, as in her visual art\, Carolina engages in a conversation between sight and sound. Her Fantasias provide the perfect entrée to a futuristic soundscape. \nConcluding the program is the great Piano Quartet in C minor\, Op. 15 by Gabriel Fauré. Fauré’s music and even French music\, in general\, is often described in terms of color and movement. Why is that? The four movements of this great work show how light can suffuse sound and how the chamber ensemble can exhibit a sonic range from pointillism to romantic grandeur. What better to brighten a cold January evening! \nArtists: Brittany Boulding Breeden\, violin; Timothy Christie\, viola; Carolina Eyck\, theremin; Henry Kramer\, piano; Maria Sampen\, violin; and Sally Singer Tuttle\, cello. \nGeneral Admission seating. Tickets ($20 Adult\, $45 Family Pass\, $8 Youth) are available at www.wwcmf.org.

SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Nutcracker" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will host two screenings of the current Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker on Sunday\, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday\, December 19 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThe young Clara (danced by Royal Ballet Principal Francesca Hayward) creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favorite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King\, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets\, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home\, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognize Drosselmeyer’s nephew? \nThe famous role of the Sugar Plum Fairy is danced by Royal Ballet Principal Sarah Lamb with her Prince\, Principal dancer Steven McRae. \nPeter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting\, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic\, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment\, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous\, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. \nThis production of The Nutcracker has enthralled audiences for over 30 years since its opening in 1984. It showcases the full energy of the Company\, alongside the emerging talent of young dancers from The Royal Ballet School. The stunning costumes\, numbering around 600 and dating back to the world-premiere\, are revitalized for the show. \nLoosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann\, the ballet opens with a lively Christmas party\, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material\, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince\, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love. \nThis screening runs approximately 2 hours 35 minutes including one interval and an onscreen introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Ballet production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on Wednesday\, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to Danza Classica Ballet Foundation. \n \nAt a garden party on a sunny afternoon\, Alice is surprised to see her parents’ friend Lewis Carroll transform into a white rabbit. When she follows him down a rabbit hole events become curiouser and curiouser…As Alice journeys through Wonderland\, she encounters countless strange creatures. She’s swept off her feet by the charming Knave of Hearts\, who’s on the run for stealing the tarts. Confusion piles upon confusion. Then Alice wakes with a start. Was it all a daydream? \nChristopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour\, stage magic and inventive\, sophisticated choreography. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative\, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real. \nAlice encounters a cast of extraordinary and instantly recognizable characters\, from the highly strung Queen of Hearts – who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty’s famous Rose Adage – to a playing-card corps de ballet\, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen\, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best\, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment. \nThis production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. The screening runs approximately 2 hours 50 minutes including two intervals and an onscreen introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Additional donations for Danza Classica Ballet Foundation will be accepted. \nRSVP on Facebook \n\nAbout Danza Classica Ballet Foundation\nCreated as a sister organization to The Dance Center\, Danza Classica Ballet Foundation fosters and advances the art of ballet in the Walla Walla Valley by providing resources for ballet education\, enhancing learning opportunities through in-studio and master classes\, local and visiting performances\, travel\, and ballet study scholarship assistance\, as well as promoting appreciation for classical ballet in our community. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "La bohème" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Opera production of “La bohème” on Wednesday\, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nWhen Rodolfo\, a penniless poet\, meets Mimì\, a seamstress\, they fall instantly in love. Irresistible in its witty\, passionate blend of comedy and tragedy\, the opera focuses on the lives of a group of young artists as they eke out an existence on the bohemian fringes of Paris\, the capital of the 19th century. It was first performed in Covent Garden in 1897 and has had more than five hundred performances there since. \nThis screening runs approximately 2 hours 35 minutes including one intermission and an onscreen introduction. Like horror films? \nGesa Power House Theatre will screen a classic horror film\, followed by a costume contest and after party this Halloween\, Tuesday\, October 31 starting at 7:00 p.m. \nHorror Film:\nGeorge R. Romero’s 1968 film “Night of the Living Dead” is a cult classic credited with popularizing the concept of “zombies” as we think of them today. It was criticized at the time for its explicitly gory special effects\, and ushered in a new wave of “splatter” horror films. The film’s plot follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from flesh eating monsters – the dead come back to life. \n \nCostume Contest:\nContestants for the costume contest are encouraged to show up by 6:30 p.m. to give the judges more time to evaluate their costumes. Fun photo opportunities will be available at several “selfie stations” set up around the theater. Following the film screening (at approximately 8:45 p.m.)\, trophies and prizes will be awarded in the categories of Best Costume\, Funniest\, Most Creative and Sexiest. \nAfter Party: \nStay for an After Party in the Electric Lounge hosted by Chardonnay (Jimmy Vaughan). Anyone in costume will receive drink discounts all night. \nGeneral admission tickets ($13) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n  \n\nThis event is supported by: \n \nThe 2017 Gesa Power House Theatre Season receives support from: \n \n   \nCourtyard Marriott\, Inland Cellular\,\nMcCurley Integrity Toyota of Walla Walla\, Pacific Power

SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Magic Flute" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Opera production of The Magic Flute on Wednesday\, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nMozart’s glorious opera The Magic Flute is brought enchantingly to life in David McVicar’s production with beautiful sets by John Macfarlane. \nPrince Tamino promises the Queen of the Night that he will rescue her daughter Pamina from the enchanter Sarastro. He begins his quest\, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno – but all is not as it seems… \nDavid McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals\, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score\, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty\, folksong-like arias. \nAs well as being a comedy\, The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ – a great opera. \nThis screening runs about 3 hours 10 minutes including one interval and a 15-minute introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. RSVP on Facebook \nSUNG IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES \n \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Film: "Food Evolution"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the recent documentary film “Food Evolution” on Wednesday\, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nNarrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson\, “Food Evolution” wrestles with the emotions and the science driving one of the most heated arguments of our time – the controversy surrounding GMOs and food. Academy Award-nominated directo Scott Hamilton Kennedy (The Garden\, Fame High\, OT: Our Town) travels from Hawaiian papaya groves\, to banana farms in Uganda\, to the cornfields of Iowa in search of the truth. \nThe GMO debate is brutally polarizing\, marked by passion\, suspicion\, and confusion. Both pro and anti camps claim science is on their side. Who’s right? \n“Food Evolution” shows how easily misinformation\, confusion and fear can overwhelm objective analysis. How do we ensure that our food supply is safe\, and that everyone has enough to eat? How do we feed the world while also protecting the planet? Has genetic engineering increased or decreased pesticide use? Are GMO foods bad for your health? And\, most importantly\, what data\, evidence and sources are we using to approach these important questions? \nWhile the passionate advocates in the film are all concerned with the stewardship of safe\, nutritious food for the planet\, their differing views over what constitutes the truth have pit them against each other\, rendering the very subject of food itself into an ideological battleground. \nEnlisting subject matter experts as well as farmers and scientists from around the world\, this bold documentary separates the hype and emotion from the science and data to unravel the debate around food\, and help audiences reach their own conclusions. \nThe film was commissioned and funded by The Institute of Food Technologists\, a nonprofit scientific society of more than 17\,000 members from around the world. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n“Food Evolution” runs approximately 90 minutes.
