SUMMARY:Honoring Women Peacebuilders in Africa and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 22\, at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly features Honoring Women Peacebuilders in Africa and Beyond. This event is sponsored by The American Association of University Women (AAUW)-Walla Walla and Humanities Washington. \nRichard Middleton-Kaplan (he/him) is the director of Academic Support Services at Whitman College. In 2011\, Richard spent a sabbatical at the Centre for Applied Human Rights at University of York\, helping to develop a course on literature and human rights. His publications include “Using Literature to Teach Peace” in Peace Research: The Canadian Journal of Peace and Conflict Studies. \nWhat makes women’s peacebuilding movements so effective—often more effective than larger scale national and international initiatives? Why is the work of women peacebuilders less well-known and celebrated than that of their male counterparts? Is the collective nature of women’s peacemaking work a reason it’s both effective yet also underappreciated?   \nIn this talk\, meet peacebuilders beyond the usual names like Mother Theresa and Jane Addams\, and gain an appreciation for the collective nature of women’s peacebuilding activities. Glimpse the more peaceful horizon that could dawn if we inspired and supported women’s peacebuilding collectives.  \nGesa Power House Theatre is committed to ensuring that the arts are for everyone. Join us for this free community event\, bringing impactful stories to the Walla Walla Valley. Donations are welcome! \n

SUMMARY:Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents the rescheduled\, Live Cinema screening of Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo on Wednesday\, March 5 at 7PM. A new installment of our Live Cinema series\, watch the best of the best as this play is screened live across the world from London’s Dock X. \nDavid Tennant (Doctor Who\, Broadchurch) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife\, Criminal Record) lead a stellar cast in an ‘enthralling’ (★★★★★ Daily Telegraph) new production of Shakespeare’s MACBETH\, filmed live at the Donmar Warehouse in London\, especially for the big screen. Unsettling intimacy and brutal action combine at breakneck speed as Max Webster (Life of Pi\, Henry V) directs this tragic tale of love\, murder\, and nature’s power of renewal. With staging ‘full of wolfish imagination and alarming surprise’ (★★★★★ The Guardian)\, the immersive 5.1 cinema surround sound places the audience inside the minds of the Macbeths\, asking are we ever really responsible for our actions? \nMacbeth is coming. A couple corrupted by their relentless lust for power have blood on their hands. Witness the gripping tale of greed\, murder\, deception\, and superstition in cinemas for a limited time only. Once you cross the line\, you can never turn back. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

SUMMARY:Jess Plus None
DESCRIPTION:On March 12\, 2025\, at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre presents the comedy film Jess Plus None. \n \nJess (Abby Miller\, Justified)\, a reluctant maid-of-honor attends her best friend’s off-the-grid wedding in the woods\, where she’s forced to confront her ex-girlfriend\, her more successful college friends\, and every horrible choice she’s made in her life so far\, until a chance meeting with an elusive park ranger (Matt Walsh\, Veep) shows Jess the real force of nature at this wedding…might be her. \n“Screwball comedies feel like something from a bygone era\, but Mandy Fabian’s directorial debut JESS PLUS NONE manages its tones masterfully while giving us a flawed but relatable protagonist who’s simply doing the best she can. If you’re not laughing\, you’re cringing\, and that makes it a screwball comedy through a contemporary lens.” – SQF \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available starting November 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Take One Thing Off (film)
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 14\, at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre will present Scout Durwood’s digital series\, Take One Thing Off. \nAn existential odyssey based on the original music from cabaret singer/bon vivant Scout Durwood’s debut studio album\, Take One Thing Off is a twenty-two episode digital series combining music videos and narrative sketch following Scout’s transition from performing in dive bars and supper clubs in NYC to the City of Angels where IRL is IR-relevant forcing her to step onto the biggest\, strangest stage she’s encountered so far: The Internet. \nSynopsis\nTake One Thing Off features eleven comedy vignettes paired with eleven original music videos from Scout Durwood’s debut studio album with Blue Elan Records. The series follows the life of chanteuse/bon vivant Scout Durwood\, who has spent most of her adult life singing in New York supper clubs and dive bars\, fostering a meaningful connection between audience and performer. Now living in Los Angeles\, where IRL seems IR-relevant\, she’s stepping onto the biggest\, strangest stage of all: The Internet. \nIn this twenty-two episode digital series\, Scout traverses the deserts of YouTube tutorials in her episodes Make-Up Tutorial\, DIY Cupcake Bra and Scout on Scout. She opines on the chemical reactions society has labeled “romance” in her ballads Here We Are and Falling in Love\, and delves into the complicated nature of female friendships in Frenemies. Take One Thing Off is as esoteric as it is slapstick; as high- concept as it is low-brow. You’ll laugh. She’ll cry. Grown men will drink wine from a baby pool. So be the strange you wish to see in the world\, and in the immortal words of Coco Chanel\, “after you dress but before you leave the house\, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”\n \nReserved tickets will be available for $15 ($10 for students) starting November 15th\, either online or via the Box Office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Scout Durwood\, Live!
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will welcome comedian Scout Durwood back to the stage on Saturday\, March 15 at 7 PM. \nScout Durwood Live combines comedy\, music\, storytelling and cabaret into a singular narrative extravaganza including hits from TAKE ONE THING OFF and COMEDY ELECTRONICA such as (I DON’T WANT TO) HOLD UR BABY\, SEXUALLY IMPLICIT\, STEAL UR GIRLFRIEND and more. \nInspired by her formative years as a go-go dancer and burlesque emcee\, Scout’s joyfully irreverent outlook on life embraces Big Tent Queerness as a way of spreading love and unity throughout the land. A throwback to the Bette Midler bathhouse shows of the 70’s\, this lightly interactive experience embraces queerness not just as sexual orientation\, but as a way of life. From a dance craze inspired by Wacky Wavers to a heartfelt embrace of the darkest parts of our psyche\, Scout encourages audiences to fly their freak flag with pride. SUMMARY:Seattle Jewish Film Festival Shorts Program
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 2 at 7 p.m.\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly partners once again with the Seattle Jewish Film Festival for 2025’s short film showcase\, HASHIVENU: RETURN US. This collection of short films was curated by our Director of Film Programming\, Warren Etheredge. \nWhen people speak of grit\, they usually mean the power of perseverance. From a secular mindset\, grit is a manifestation of stick-to-it-tiveness. For this block of short films\, we explore a more divine form of resilience\, hashivenu—a reaffirming of faith in challenging times of grief or crisis. \nFor SJFF’s 30th Pearl Anniversary\, this strand of seven cinematic gems exhibits the transformation through adversity to resilience (Rated PG-13).\n \nA program of the Stroum Jewish Community Center\, the Seattle Jewish Film Festival runs March 22- April 6. For more information about the annual Seattle Jewish Film Festival\, visit SEATTLEJFF.ORG.

SUMMARY:Bon Débarras
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 4\, 2025 at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Bon Débarras. \nBon Débarras unites the worlds of music\, dance and poetry through a collaboration between Montreal artists Dominic Desrochers\, Jean-François Dumas and Veronique Plasse. The group brings together a fusion of Quebecois folk music\, traditional step-dancing and global influences\, for a show that is full of fun and inventive energy. On guitar\, banjo\, violin and harmonica\, the trio opens a door to their recollections of America and their music is at the intersection of various traditions. Bon Débarras’ energy taps into the rhythms of today and ventures boldly on the multi-faceted road to tomorrow’s dreams\, in an atmosphere that transcends boundaries and ages.\nDOMINIC DESROCHERS: His passion for sound and movement comes all the way back from those family gatherings\, where singers\, dancers and accordionists helped create his artistic vision. Over time\, Dominic added another passion to music and poetry: percussive dance. Multi-instrumentalist\, choreographer and founding member of Zogma\, an urban folk group\, Dominic is always willing to share his knowledge through educational workshops and master classes. His talent has been widely recognized by various organizations and groups like le Cirque du Soleil\, La Bottine Souriante\, Loco Locass and Les 7 doigts de la main. His approach is to make percussive dance an extension of oneself. His motto: “Scratch the sky\, the earth gives you an itch\, then beat the earth and the sky warms you up… All you can beat\, bon appétit! There is jig a plenty at the banquet of your two feet”. \nJEAN-FRANÇOIS DUMAS: Talk about a one-man band! Accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, Jean-François Dumas grew up in a family of musicians and singers where his early musical talent bloomed among songs and melodies from times past. At the age of 17\, driven by a thirst for freedom\, his guitar slung over his shoulder\, he chose travelling to learn his trade. His journeys took him through the United-States\, Latin America and Europe. There he discovered other peoples’ folk traditions and colors\, and nourished his boundless passion for musical interbreeding in which his own roots lie. Several participations to Noël dans le Parc (Christmas in the Park) as a performer and music director enabled him to stage shows convening artists of all cultures to help create ties between people and generations. Somehow\, it’s there that the trio Bon Débarras was born. Equipped with a solid musical knowledge and background\, Jean-François has performed with many spirited artists among which La Bottine Souriante\, Cedric Watson\, Juan Sebastian Larobina and Edgar Bori. \nVERONIQUE PLASSE: A trained actress and a musician\, has joined the world of traditional music since a score of years\, working at enhancing Québec cultural heritage. Her commitments and involvements are driven by goals which are at the heart of whatever she undertakes: creation\, gathering\, preservation and diffusion. Endowed with a very sensitive and positive energy\, Véronique really enjoys bringing to the public her knowledge and a kind of cultural expertise she acquired through encounters and research. Spurred by her passion for Québec traditional music\, this violinist and singer has been active on the international traditional folk scene for about 20 years. Recognized by her fellow trad musicians as a high-calibre performer\, Véronique strongly believes that we must carry on the effort of creating moments and places where beauty\, sharing and human interaction weave the threads of a sociocultural fabric we can all call our own.\nThe latest addition to the Bon Débarras trad trio\, Véronique performs also in several other significant projects: Beaton-Plasse\, Les Commandos Trad\, Barbo and Hurlevent. \nReserved tickets will be available starting at $30 ($20 for students) on February 15th\, either online or via the Box Office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Burden of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Burden of Dreams captures legendary director Werner Herzog’s filming of his most ambitious film Fitzcarraldo\, in which an entrepreneur (Klaus Kinski) endeavors to push a steamship over a mountain to build an opera house in the Amazon jungle\, one thousand miles away from civilization.\nFeaturing visceral interviews with Herzog\, Burden of Dreams which was held by Roger Ebert as “one of the most remarkable documentaries ever made about the making of a movie” depicts the full range of Herzog’s unflinching vision spanning four years of production\, despite all odds\, such as the lead actor (Jason Robards) who had to leave the set after 40% of the shoot was completed and ultimately was replaced by Herzog’s muse\, Klaus Kinski. Most notoriously\, the film features a jaw-dropping sequence featuring Herzog requiring hundreds of native Campa\, Machiguenga\, and Aguaruna people to pull a full-size\, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. The result is an extraordinary document of the filmmaking process and a unique look into the single-minded mission of one of cinema’s most fearless directors. \nBlank’s interviews with Herzog\, bring context and backstory to his personalized style of “ethnographic filmmaking\,” which values Peru’s native\, Campa\, Machiguenga\, and Aguaruna people and their Old World culture as much as it does Herzog’s perilous enterprise. Blank’s appreciation for the jungle comes through in his uninflected photography of insects\, birds\, and even the feet and faces of his Peruvian subjects – as frequently set against the classical music that Herzog used in Fitzcarraldo.\n \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available on February 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Art For Everybody
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 30 at 7 p.m.\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Art For Everybody. Thomas Kinkade’s pastoral landscapes made him the most collected and despised painter of all time. After his shocking death\, his family discovers a vault of unseen paintings that reveal a complex artist whose life and work embody our divided America. \nYou’ve seen his cozy cottages\, idyllic gardens\, and welcoming village streets on everything from canvas to commemorative plates. Both celebrated and disparaged for his kitschy signature settings\, the “Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade rocketed to popularity in the ‘90s by marketing himself to American evangelicals and pitting himself against the elite art establishment. \nYet beneath the pristine public persona were demons that would drive him to alcoholism\, scandal\, and death from an overdose in 2012. After his passing\, Kinkade’s daughters uncovered a trove of unseen\, unexpectedly dark paintings\, a discovery that launched an investigation into their father’s true personality. \nThrough the voices of skeptical critics\, adoring fans\, and Kinkade’s closest friends and family\, ART FOR EVERYBODY digs deep into Kinkade’s life and work to elucidate the real man behind the persona. Accomplished editor Miranda Yousef’s directorial debut is an insightful documentary that peels back the layers of Kinkade’s facade\, delivering a portrait of a complex man divided by the same forces that continue to pull us apart as a nation.\n \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available on February 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales?
