SUMMARY:Sequential: The Storytelling Power of Comic Books
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, June 11\, 2025 as Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Sequential: The Storytelling Power of Comic Books. This event is sponsored by Humanities Washington. \nJosh Tuininga (he/him) is an author\, artist\, and designer. After studying fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, he founded an art and design agency\, where he continues to work as creative director. His work has been published in the magazines Communication Arts and HOW Design. Tuininga is the author of the children’s books Why Blue? and Dream On. We Are Not Strangers is his first graphic novel\, which was a 2024 Washington State book award finalist!\n \nDespite the graphic novel’s skyrocketing popularity\, many still view the art form as unsophisticated or less credible than traditional forms of literature. In this talk\, comic artist Josh Tuininga shows how comic books and graphic novels are not only powerful art forms\, but have unique abilities to challenge young readers in surprising ways and can help prepare students for a rapidly changing future.   \nTuininga traces the origins of sequential art—exploring the evolution of the art form and its impact on readers and culture throughout history. He also shares an in-depth look at the sequential art process as he presents his graphic novel\, We Are Not Strangers—a true family story which follows a Jewish immigrant’s efforts to help his Japanese-American neighbors while they are incarcerated during World War II.  \nGesa Power House Theatre is committed to ensuring that the arts are for everyone. Join us for this free community event\, bringing impactful stories to the Walla Walla Valley. Donations are welcome!

SUMMARY:Kira Soltanovich
DESCRIPTION:On July 18\, at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre welcomes to the stage Kira Soltanovich. This program is supported\, in part\, by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission.  \nKira Soltanovich is a comedian\, actress\, and writer best known for her correspondent work on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for almost 9 years. She was the Phony Photo Booth\, which turned into the show’s longest-running comedy piece. (that didn’t have Jay in it). Kira teams up with Jay Leno again in the You Bet Your Life game show reboot in syndication on FOX now. \nKira has a half-hour stand-up special on Showtime called Here Comes Trouble and a one-hour stand-up special on Amazon called You Did This To Me. She’s the sidekick to host Donald Faison on the Netflix game show\, Winsanity and she’s been a recurring comedian on several FOX television shows: Punchline and The Drama. Kira was a series regular on two seasons of TruTV’s How To Be A Grownup\, and also shot two seasons of the Facebook series The Turndown which was shot exclusively in a bed. \nMany of her fans remember her from the hidden camera show\, Girls Behaving Badly\, where she was a series regular for 4 seasons. Kira has been featured on Comedy Central\, NBC’s Last Comic Standing\, Nickelodeon\, several Disney shows\, and one of her most unique claim to fame moments came when Hell’s Kitchen made her the “prize” for the winning team of chefs who got a night out at The Laugh Factory on the Sunset Strip. \nKira was born in the former Soviet Union\, was traded for grains from the United States and immigrated in American when she was 2 years old. Kira honed her comedy chops all throughout grade school and up until high school graduation. It’s amazing how telling an angry principal a few jokes can get you out of serious trouble.\n \nReserved seating tickets starting at $25 ($20 for students) will be available online or at the box office (509-529-6500) beginning May 15th. SUMMARY:All God's Children
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents All God’s Children on Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025\, at 7PM. This program is supported\, in part\, by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission. \nIn an unprecedented attempt to heal centuries of racism and antisemitism\, and combat the rising racial and ethnic tension in their Brooklyn communities\, the largest reform synagogue and the oldest black Baptist Church attempt to unite their congregations and bring about peace\, by becoming family. Shot over five years by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner\, ALL GOD’S CHILDREN follows her sister\, activist Rabbi Rachel Timoner\, and her Congregation Beth Elohim’s partnership with Reverend Dr. Robert Waterman of Antioch Baptist Church as their faith is put to the test\, and both congregations struggle not to let their differences drive them apart. Though it’s a fraught partnership\, they refuse to walk away\, no matter how hard it gets\, and ultimately emerge with an inspiring model for how other communities might build bridges across religious\, economic and class divides to foster enduring\, powerful partnerships. \n\n \n“I began what became ALL GOD’S CHILDREN as a short film called REBEL RABBI in 2019. I was inspired by my sister’s Rabbi Rachel Timoners determination to do whatever she could to set things right in the world. As a Rabbi\, she had been arrested eight times in the last couple of years for leading nonviolent protests\, but I knew Rachel’s primary mission was always to fight racism\, dating back to our childhood in the segregated South. \nShortly after we started filming\, she had a meeting with Reverend Dr. Robert Waterman\, and they set about an unprecedented partnership to try to stop racism and antisemitism in their Brooklyn communities by becoming family – so following Rachel and Robert’s mission became our focus\, and boy was it a tumultuous ride! \nFive years later we have emerged with a feature film which I believe is an inspiring example of how to foster enduring dialogue and the power of partnership\, across all differences – religious\, racial\, or economic.” — Ondi Timoner. Director/Producer/Editor/Writer \nReserved tickets will be available for $15 ($10 for students) on May 15th\, either online or via the Box Office at 509-529-6500.
