SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Nutcracker" (ballet)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker on Sunday\, December 16 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThe young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favorite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King\, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets\, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home\, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognize Drosselmeyer’s nephew? \nPeter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting\, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic\, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment\, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous\, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. \nThis production of The Nutcracker has enthralled audiences for over 30 years since its opening in 1984. It showcases the full energy of the Company\, alongside the emerging talent of young dancers from The Royal Ballet School. The stunning costumes\, numbering around 600 and dating back to the world-premiere\, are revitalized for the show. \nLoosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann\, the ballet opens with a lively Christmas party\, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material\, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince\, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love. \nThe Royal Opera House cinema broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage\, interviews and incredibly detailed close-ups of performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including an onscreen introduction and one intermission. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating: $15 Adults\, $10 Students are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales\, please call 509-876-1662. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going to the show on Facebook. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Die Walküre" (opera)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema series continues with a screening of the current Royal Opera production of Wagner’s Die Walküre\, with one screening on Sunday\, December 9 at 1:00 p.m. \nDie Walküre (The Valkyrie) is the second opera in Richard Wagner’s epic Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle). It features several of the Ring’s musical highlights – the sparkling Magic Fire Music and the electrifying Ride of the Valkyries. But among the musical fireworks and Norse mythology\, at the centre of this opera are the unforgettable characters and the complex entanglements between them\, including twins Siegmund and Sieglinde\, and Wotan and his Valkyrie daughter\, Brünnhilde. \n \nDie Walküre will features a stellar international cast including Australian tenor Stuart Skelton (Siegmund) and John Lundgren (Wotan)\, who both make their Royal Opera debuts\, American soprano Emily Magee (Sieglinde) and award winning Swedish soprano Nina Stemme (Brünnhilde). Die Walküre will be conducted by Antonio Pappano Music Director of The Royal Opera House. \nThis is a story of love\, loss and family entanglements. Years before the opera opens\, Wotan\, ruler of the gods\, disguised himself as a mortal man and had twins with a mortal woman who gave birth to twins Siegmund and Sieglinde who were separated during their childhood. Wotan hopes that he can use his son Siegmund to retrieve a gold ring of ultimate power\, which threatens to bring about the Gods’ destruction. He engineers a meeting between Siegmund and Sieglinde\, now unhappily married to Hunding. Initially unaware of each other’s identity\, the siblings fall in love. Wotan intends to protect his incestuous children from Hunding’s wrath\, but his wife Fricka\, guardian of marriage\, forbids him to do this. However\, Wotan’s daughter Brünnhilde\, who is moved by Siegmund’s devotion to Sieglinde\, intervenes in an attempt to save the couple. Wotan kills Siegmund\, fulfilling his promise to Fricka. Brünnhilde manages to save Sieglinde\, now pregnant with Siegmund’s child but cannot escape punishment from Wotan\, who condemns her to mortality and marriage. However\, Wotan’s love for his daughter leads him to grant her a final request: that she be left to sleep encircled by magical fire\, so that only a hero can find and wake her. \nThe Royal Opera House cinema broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage\, interviews and incredibly detailed close-ups of performers. \nThis production of Die Walküre is sung in German with English surtitles. \nRuntime: approximately 5 hours\, including an onscreen introduction and two intermissions. SUMMARY:Pigs on the Wing - Pink Floyd Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Pink Floyd tribute band Pigs on the Wing will perform “Finding the Dark Side of the Moon” on Friday\, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Gesa Power House Theatre. \n \n“Finding the Dark Side of the Moon” is a retrospective live concert experience culminating in a full performance of Pink Floyd’s 1973 concept album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” \nSince its formation in Portland in 2006\, Pigs on the Wing has steadily developed a reputation for delivering a high quality\, high energy take on Pink Floyd’s music. All of the members of the band are seasoned veterans of the original rock scene and balance a decidedly un-tribute like attitude towards the music with a deep understanding of the precision and importance of Pink Floyd in many fans’ lives. The result is a sound and experience both refreshing in delivery and yet true to the original – something the band believes sets it apart from other Pink Floyd tributes. \nAfter immersing themselves in the polished rock theatrics of “The Wall” during the 2017 season – the band felt it was time to try something different. Pigs on the Wing’s 2018 production – “Finding the Dark Side of the Moon\,” call back to the band’s very first show\, which was a performance of “The Dark Side of the Moon.” In the ensuing years\, the band’s regional fan base has grown exponentially alongside the band themselves as musicians\, as well as the scale of the show as an immersive audio-visual experience. \nThis time around – expect two full sets of Pink Floyd music – the first a loosely chronological retrospective of Pink Floyd’s work before becoming a household name; and the second a full performance of what many would argue is among rock music’s finest works from cover to cover\, “The Dark Side of the Moon.” \n \nPigs on the Wing is comprised of (L to R): Eric Welder (bass\, vocals); Pete Galluzzo (sax); David Lindenbaum (guitar\, vocals); Matt Jones (keys\, vocals); Bryan Fairfield (drums); Keeley St. Clair (vocals\, acoustic guitar); Jason Baker (guitar\, vocals). \nReserved seating tickets ($25 adults\, $22 students). This concert is SOLD OUT. Please contact the box office at 509-529-6500 if you would like to be on a wait list for tickets. \nJoin the Facebook event and invite your friends!

SUMMARY:Film: "Love\, Gilda"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the new documentary film Love\, Gilda on Wednesday\, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Just Us Girls Sharing (J.U.G.S.). \n \nIn Love\, Gilda\, comedienne Gilda Radner reflects on her life and career\, in her own words. Weaving together her recently discovered audiotapes\, interviews with friends (Chevy Chase\, Lorne Michaels\, Laraine Newman\, Paul Shaffer and Martin Short)\, rare home movies and diaries read by modern-day comedians inspired by Gilda (Bill Hader\, Amy Poehler\, Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong)\, Love\, Gilda opens up a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of a beloved performer whose greatest role was sharing her story. \nGilda Radner puts a smile on the faces of people who remember watching her as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live\, where she created and portrayed such now-classic comic characters as Roseanne Roseannadanna\, Emily Litella and Lisa Loopner. She quickly rose to meteoric fame in television\, movies and on Broadway. \nLove\, Gilda\, directed by Lisa D’Apolito\, is a true autobiography\, told in Gilda’s words and in her own voice. Working with the Radner Estate\, D’Apolito unearthed a collection of diaries and personal audio and videotapes documenting her childhood\, her comedy career\, her relationships and ultimately\, her struggle with cancer. This never-before-seen footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary\, allowing Gilda to tell her own story– through the laughter and sometimes the tears. Incredibly\, she was able to find humor in even the darkest of times. Gilda’s spirit lives on in comedy as a female trailblazer who continues to inspire many present day comedic performers\, including Bill Hader\, Amy Poehler\, Maya Rudolph\, and Cecily Strong. \nAlso interviewed are SNL original cast members– Chevy Chase\, Laraine Newman and Paul Shaffer– as well as\, Lorne Michaels (SNL creator and producer)\, Alan Zweibel (SNL writer)\, Stephen Schwartz (Broadway composer); Andrew Alexander (CEO of Second City) and long-time friend Martin Short. \nThis film has a runtime of 86 minutes. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating: $15 Adults\, $10 Students (in advance); $18 Adults\, $12 Students (at the door). SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents Every Brilliant Thing starring Kevin Loomer and directed by Nancy Simon\, with performances Friday\, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday\, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go towards local suicide prevention efforts. \nEvery Brilliant Thing is a one-actor play\, adapted by playwright Duncan McMillan from his own short story “Sleeve Notes”. British comedian Jonny Donahue\, who originated the role\, shares in the writing credit. The play’s title refers to a list – of everything wonderful in the world – that the narrator writes in response to his mother attempting suicide. He starts the list at age seven with items like “ice cream” and “staying up past your bedtime\,” and as the narrator grows older\, the list grows longer. \nThe play’s story spans nearly three decades and several life-changing events\, evoking laughter and tears in equal measure. The play has received critical acclaim in London\, Edinburgh\, and Off-Broadway in New York City. \n“It’s the funniest play you’re ever likely to see about depression\, and also the most moving” – British Theatre Guide \nEvery Brilliant Thing invites some audience participation\, primarily through asking people to read a few words aloud during the performance from slips of paper they are given as they enter the theater. A few audience members are incorporated into scenes\, with the actor doing most of the heavy lifting. The play will be performed “in the round” with on-stage seating. \n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Loomer is a familiar face on Walla Walla’s many stages – under the spotlight and behind the scenes. He performed this role on the Gesa Power House Theatre stage last September\, and is active in local theater productions\, including at The Little Theatre of Walla Walla. Kevin is the Director of Theatre Arts at Walla Walla Community College.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Nancy Simon is Professor Emerita at Whitman College where she taught theater classes and directed at Harper Joy Theatre for nearly 50 years. Following her retirement\, she remains active in the local theater scene. She recently directed Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery at The Little Theatre of Walla Walla.\n\n\n\nNon-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($20 Adults; $15 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n \n$1/ticket will be donated to Reach Out\, whose mission is to focus on breaking down the barriers to suicide intervention\, promoting resiliency\, encouraging and facilitating help-seeking\, inspiring our local community to take a personal stake in suicide prevention\, and educating the public on guidelines for engagement\, intervention\, and help-seeking in moments of crisis. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook! \nSee also: Suicide: The Ripple Effect (documentary film) \nThis event is held in honor of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. If you are struggling with mental health or contemplating suicide\, please call the Walla Walla Crisis Response Team at (509) 524-2999 or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK. \n \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales?
