DESCRIPTION:Kate & The Crocodiles will perform a concert at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday\, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. Proceeds will benefit The Health Center. \n \nKate & The Crocodiles are a Portland-based quartet who perform stunning indie rock originals and covers\, early jazz and jazz standards\, reinventions of ‘70s and ’80s rock as ballads\, classical art songs mixed with rock (yes really)\, and other surprises from far and wide. If the spectrum sounds broad\, it is all held together by a signature sound informed by classical training and a respectful blending of many genres. It’s like a warm conversation with a good friend—and at times\, it’s like world-class music meets stand-up comedy because these fun four have what may be considered almost too much fun performing together. An evening with Kate & The Crocodiles is an intimate\, unforgettable treasure. \nKate & The Crocodiles are: \n\nKate Morrison – a refreshing and innovative\, classically-trained female vocalist with deep roots in Walla Walla\nCraig Bidondo – a colorful\, energetic\, and soulful keyboardist\nGavin Bondy – the intuitive trumpeter of Pink Martini\nBrent Follis – a truly world-class drummer\n\nReserved seating tickets ($35) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Swan Lake" - Royal Ballet (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a rescheduled screening of the current Royal Ballet production of Swan Lake on Wednesday\, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to the Walla Walla Symphony. \n \nSwan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This Season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text\, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet\, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane. \nThe cast for this production includes: \nODETTE – Marianela Nuñez\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED – Vadim Muntagirov\nVON ROTHBART – Bennet Gartside\nTHE QUEEN – Elizabeth McGorian\nBENNO – Alexander Campbell\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED’S YOUNGER SISTERS – Akane Takada\, Francesca Hayward \nPrince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman\, Odette\, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive\, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. \nSwan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet score. Given its status today as arguably one of the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets\, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime\, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky’s score\, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa’s royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov. \nThe Live Cinema Series features productions by The Royal Ballet\, The Royal Opera\, and The Royal Shakespeare Company\, filmed live in England\, and rebroadcast to select theaters. \nRuntime: approximately 3 hours 25 minutes including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales\, please call 509-876-1662. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook. \n \nAbout the Walla Walla Symphony:\nThe Walla Walla Symphony delights and challenges our community by providing live orchestral performances and opportunities for learning about music. Learn more at www.wwsymphony.org. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? Become a Gesa Power House Theatre Member (highest priority) or sign up for our e-mail list! \n\nThe 2018 Live Cinema Series is sponsored by Shakespeare Walla Walla\, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that aims to make Shakespeare and theater approachable and entertaining to students in eastern Washington and Oregon.

Set in the late 1970s\, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous\, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. \nPushed to the boiling point\, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist\, egotistical\, lying\, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events\, Violet\, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged\,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover\, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey\, a girl can scheme\, can’t she? \nAccording to Director Tyson Kaup\, 9 to 5 speaks to the current social climate and tackles a serious subject\, sexual harassment in the workplace\, but does so balanced with humor.\n\n“Part of the brilliance of the style of 9 to 5\, is that it manages to convey a really important message through humor and play without being judgmental or lecturing\,” says Kaup. “It doesn’t take itself too seriously.”\n \nThe cast for 9 to 5 is as follows:\nVIOLET – Heather Johnson\nJUDY – Dani Hobbs\nDORALEE – Kristin Glaeser\nFRANKLIN HART – Chris Maxfield\nROZ – Martina Paris-Fully\nJOE – Eric Rohde \nENSEMBLE:\nKory Carterby\nOriana Golden\nRichele Heilbrun\nPeter Hoffman\nRebecca Kelly\nCarrie LaRoy\nSergio Muñoz\nDaniel Rose\nJanine Wheeler\nAbigail Wissink \nMUSICIANS:\nSilas Brannan\nCollin Iedema\nNate Miller\nCarson Schmidt\nKevin Stauffer\nPaul Vandervort\nThorin Zanger\nPerformance schedule:\nFriday\, August 17 – 7:00 p.m.\nSaturday\, August 18 – 2:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.\nSunday\, August 19 – 2:00 p.m. \nFriday\, August 24 – 7:00 p.m.\nSaturday\, August 25 – 2:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.\nSunday\, August 26 – 2:00 p.m. \nContent advisory: contains adult humor and content. \nReserved seating tickets ($45-$25 Adults; $20 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:2018 Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival - Series 4
DESCRIPTION:Each June\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival presents over 30 events around the Walla Walla Valley. The fourth Festival Series Concert will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday\, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. \n\n \nTonight we feature Clara Schumann’s Three Romances for violin and piano\, the Popper Requiem in F Sharp minor\, Op. 66 for 3 cellos and the Brahms B Flat Sextet\, Op. 18. \nFestival Series IV brings the 2018 Season to a close with works by Clara Schumann\, David Popper and Johannes Brahms. The Popper Requiem in F Sharp minor\, Op. 66\, is not a vocal work. However\, it capitalizes on the vocal qualities of three cellos in perfect harmony. Balancing the valedictory gravitas of the Popper are the Three Romances of Clara Schumann and the B Flat Sextet\, Op. 18 of Johannes Brahms. If the Clarinet Quintet in B minor\, Op. 115\, represents Autumn\, then surely the B Flat Sextet represents Spring. Additional work\, TBD. Celebrate the conclusion of the 2018 season in grand melodic style. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM. \nGeneral Admission: $20; Family Ticket: $45 (admits two adults and up to four children); Student Ticket: $8 (under 22 with valid student ID). For more information and tickets\, visit www.wwcmf.org. \n\nAbout the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival:\nFounded in 2007 by Artistic Director Timothy Christie\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival (WWCMF) is a non-profit organization committed to making chamber music accessible to all. In addition to tickets events\, WWCMF presents extensive free children’s programming\, targeted outreach events\, and daily free open rehearsals throughout the Walla Walla community.

SUMMARY:2018 Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival - Series 3
DESCRIPTION:Each June\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival presents over 30 events around the Walla Walla Valley. The third Festival Series Concert will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday\, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. \n\n \nTonight we feature music by Amy Beach\, Joan Tower\, Marion Bauer and Gustav Mahler. \nGustav Mahler is known as the composer of ten-ish unwieldy Symphonies\, numerous song cycles\, and as one of the most polarizing musical figures of the late 19th century. Noticeably absent from his compositional output are any substantive chamber works. There is one exception\, however\, that of a single movement for piano quartet in A minor. We pair Mahler’s single movement with music by three American composers\, Amy Beach\, Marion Bauer and Joan Tower. \nOriginally hailing from Walla Walla (woo-hoo!)\, Marion Bauer made her mark in New York City as a composer\, author and professor\, influencing such luminaries as Aaron Copland and Milton Babbitt. She was also the first in a long line of Americans to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Her three-movement Sonata for Viola and Piano\, Op. 22\, is required listening for any self-respecting music-loving resident or visitor to the Walla Walla Valley. \nRounding out the program are two works for flute and string quartet\, the Theme and Variations\, Op. 80\, by Amy Beach and Rising\, by Joan Tower (2009). SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Manon" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current production of Manon by The Royal Ballet on Wednesday\, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. This performance is filmed live in London and rebroadcast to select theaters. \n \nManon’s brother Lescaut is offering her to the highest bidder when she meets Des Grieux and falls in love. They elope to Paris\, but when Monsieur G.M. offers Manon a life of luxury as his mistress she can’t resist. With the Lescauts’ encouragement Des Grieux cheats at cards in an attempt to win Monsieur G.M.’s fortune. They are caught. Manon is arrested as a prostitute and deported to New Orleans\, followed by Des Grieux. On the run\, Manon dies from exhaustion. \nKenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. The premiere was given on March 7\, 1974\, with the lead roles danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory\, and a touchstone of adult\, dramatic dance. \nMacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this\, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid\, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story\, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas. \nCast Information: \nMANON – Sarah Lamb\nDES GRIEUX – Vadim Muntagirov\nLESCAUT – Ryoichi Hirano\nMONSIEUR G.M. – Gary Avis\nLESCAUT’S MISTRESS – Itziar Mendizabal\nMADAME – Kristen McNally\nTHE GAOLER – Thomas Whitehead\nBEGGAR CHIEF – James Hay \nRuntime: approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes\, including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. Outside food and beverages are not allowed. \nCONTENT ADVISORY: Manon contains scenes of an adult nature\, including sexual violence. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales\, please call 509-876-1662. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook! \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:2018 Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival - Series 2
DESCRIPTION:Each June\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival presents over 30 events around the Walla Walla Valley. The second Festival Series Concert will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday\, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. \n\n \nTonight we feature music of Robert Schumann\, György Kurtág\, Josh Burrel and Andrew Norman. \nOur second Festival Series performance invites the clarinet to the fore with works old and new. Robert Schumann\, ever given to flights of fantasy\, composed his Märchenerzählungen\, Op.132 near the end of his compositional life. Loosely translated as “Fairy Tales\,” this work for piano\, viola and clarinet does not tell any specific fairy tale but rather evokes certain tropes such as sparkling elven mischief\, regal pomp and the lyricism of loneliness. György Kurtág provides modernist counterpoint to Schumann’s foray into the magical with his Hommage à Robert Schumann for the same instrumentation. Also on the program are works by 21st-century composers Josh Burrel and Andrew Norman. Burrel\, in his Andooni for clarinet quintet\, mourns the Armenian genocide of 1915-1923 and Norman\, in his Gran Turismo for eight violins\, imagines an Italian baroque ensemble revving its engines at the speed of an F1 race car. Though each piece inhabits its own unique sphere\, each work shares an essential component of storytelling that looks both to the past and the future.
