SUMMARY:Bon Débarras
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 4\, 2025 at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Bon Débarras. \nBon Débarras unites the worlds of music\, dance and poetry through a collaboration between Montreal artists Dominic Desrochers\, Jean-François Dumas and Veronique Plasse. The group brings together a fusion of Quebecois folk music\, traditional step-dancing and global influences\, for a show that is full of fun and inventive energy. On guitar\, banjo\, violin and harmonica\, the trio opens a door to their recollections of America and their music is at the intersection of various traditions. Bon Débarras’ energy taps into the rhythms of today and ventures boldly on the multi-faceted road to tomorrow’s dreams\, in an atmosphere that transcends boundaries and ages.\nDOMINIC DESROCHERS: His passion for sound and movement comes all the way back from those family gatherings\, where singers\, dancers and accordionists helped create his artistic vision. Over time\, Dominic added another passion to music and poetry: percussive dance. Multi-instrumentalist\, choreographer and founding member of Zogma\, an urban folk group\, Dominic is always willing to share his knowledge through educational workshops and master classes. His talent has been widely recognized by various organizations and groups like le Cirque du Soleil\, La Bottine Souriante\, Loco Locass and Les 7 doigts de la main. His approach is to make percussive dance an extension of oneself. His motto: “Scratch the sky\, the earth gives you an itch\, then beat the earth and the sky warms you up… All you can beat\, bon appétit! There is jig a plenty at the banquet of your two feet”. \nJEAN-FRANÇOIS DUMAS: Talk about a one-man band! Accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, Jean-François Dumas grew up in a family of musicians and singers where his early musical talent bloomed among songs and melodies from times past. At the age of 17\, driven by a thirst for freedom\, his guitar slung over his shoulder\, he chose travelling to learn his trade. His journeys took him through the United-States\, Latin America and Europe. There he discovered other peoples’ folk traditions and colors\, and nourished his boundless passion for musical interbreeding in which his own roots lie. Several participations to Noël dans le Parc (Christmas in the Park) as a performer and music director enabled him to stage shows convening artists of all cultures to help create ties between people and generations. Somehow\, it’s there that the trio Bon Débarras was born. Equipped with a solid musical knowledge and background\, Jean-François has performed with many spirited artists among which La Bottine Souriante\, Cedric Watson\, Juan Sebastian Larobina and Edgar Bori. \nVERONIQUE PLASSE: A trained actress and a musician\, has joined the world of traditional music since a score of years\, working at enhancing Québec cultural heritage. Her commitments and involvements are driven by goals which are at the heart of whatever she undertakes: creation\, gathering\, preservation and diffusion. Endowed with a very sensitive and positive energy\, Véronique really enjoys bringing to the public her knowledge and a kind of cultural expertise she acquired through encounters and research. Spurred by her passion for Québec traditional music\, this violinist and singer has been active on the international traditional folk scene for about 20 years. Recognized by her fellow trad musicians as a high-calibre performer\, Véronique strongly believes that we must carry on the effort of creating moments and places where beauty\, sharing and human interaction weave the threads of a sociocultural fabric we can all call our own.\nThe latest addition to the Bon Débarras trad trio\, Véronique performs also in several other significant projects: Beaton-Plasse\, Les Commandos Trad\, Barbo and Hurlevent. \nReserved tickets will be available starting at $30 ($20 for students) on February 15th\, either online or via the Box Office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Burden of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Burden of Dreams captures legendary director Werner Herzog’s filming of his most ambitious film Fitzcarraldo\, in which an entrepreneur (Klaus Kinski) endeavors to push a steamship over a mountain to build an opera house in the Amazon jungle\, one thousand miles away from civilization.\nFeaturing visceral interviews with Herzog\, Burden of Dreams which was held by Roger Ebert as “one of the most remarkable documentaries ever made about the making of a movie” depicts the full range of Herzog’s unflinching vision spanning four years of production\, despite all odds\, such as the lead actor (Jason Robards) who had to leave the set after 40% of the shoot was completed and ultimately was replaced by Herzog’s muse\, Klaus Kinski. Most notoriously\, the film features a jaw-dropping sequence featuring Herzog requiring hundreds of native Campa\, Machiguenga\, and Aguaruna people to pull a full-size\, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. The result is an extraordinary document of the filmmaking process and a unique look into the single-minded mission of one of cinema’s most fearless directors. \nBlank’s interviews with Herzog\, bring context and backstory to his personalized style of “ethnographic filmmaking\,” which values Peru’s native\, Campa\, Machiguenga\, and Aguaruna people and their Old World culture as much as it does Herzog’s perilous enterprise. Blank’s appreciation for the jungle comes through in his uninflected photography of insects\, birds\, and even the feet and faces of his Peruvian subjects – as frequently set against the classical music that Herzog used in Fitzcarraldo.\n \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available on February 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Art For Everybody
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 30 at 7 p.m.\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Art For Everybody. Thomas Kinkade’s pastoral landscapes made him the most collected and despised painter of all time. After his shocking death\, his family discovers a vault of unseen paintings that reveal a complex artist whose life and work embody our divided America. \nYou’ve seen his cozy cottages\, idyllic gardens\, and welcoming village streets on everything from canvas to commemorative plates. Both celebrated and disparaged for his kitschy signature settings\, the “Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade rocketed to popularity in the ‘90s by marketing himself to American evangelicals and pitting himself against the elite art establishment. \nYet beneath the pristine public persona were demons that would drive him to alcoholism\, scandal\, and death from an overdose in 2012. After his passing\, Kinkade’s daughters uncovered a trove of unseen\, unexpectedly dark paintings\, a discovery that launched an investigation into their father’s true personality. \nThrough the voices of skeptical critics\, adoring fans\, and Kinkade’s closest friends and family\, ART FOR EVERYBODY digs deep into Kinkade’s life and work to elucidate the real man behind the persona. Accomplished editor Miranda Yousef’s directorial debut is an insightful documentary that peels back the layers of Kinkade’s facade\, delivering a portrait of a complex man divided by the same forces that continue to pull us apart as a nation.\n \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available on February 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Seattle Rock Orchestra plays David Bowie
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents Seattle Rock Orchestra performing David Bowie in concert on Saturday\, May 3\, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. \nJoin us for a special retrospective of David Bowie’s 50+ year career as a music legend! Seattle Rock Orchestra’s program begins with a reflection on Bowie’s early career from 1969-1974\, largely on his glamarific ‘Ziggy Stardust’ era\, featuring large swathes of his 1971 breakout album Hunky Dory\, and 1972’s masterpiece The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. After an intermission\, SRO switch gears into full-on party mode as they perform his most danceable songs—from the ‘plastic soul’ of 1975’s Young Americans\, through his reinvigorated reign as an 80’s pop icon. And\, as a meditation on his legacy\, the orchestra will take advantage of their full spectrum of tone colors\, occasionally punctuating the evening with plaintive orchestral moments taken from his experimental ‘Berlin Trilogy’ years. Featuring the songs ‘Life On Mars?\,’ ‘Starman\,’ ‘Let’s Dance\,’ ‘Under Pressure\,’ ‘Young Americans\,’ and many more\, this is a program you won’t want to miss! \nSeattle Rock Orchestra doesn’t hide behind a rock band … it is the rock band! SRO utilizes strings\, woodwinds\, brass\, percussion\, and rotating cast of exciting guest vocalists to deliver high energy tribute shows unlike any other. Each SRO show offers a dynamic mix of possibilities: a classy night out at the symphony with the infectious energy of a dance party; searing rock solos with intimate orchestral moments of staggering beauty; and fan favorite sing-alongs with lesser known ‘deep cuts’—combining to create a fun yet profoundly moving night out that honors the featured artist’s lasting legacy. \nReserved seating tickets ($50-$55) are available to the general public starting February 15th online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n\nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:No Other Land
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 14 at 7 p.m.\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents No Other Land.\n \nBasel Adra\, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta\, as soldiers destroy the homes of families – the largest single act of forced transfer ever carried out in the occupied West Bank. He crosses paths with Yuval\, an Israeli journalist who joins his struggle\, and for over half a decade they fight against the expulsion while growing closer. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel\, living under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval\, unrestricted and free. This film\, by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four young activists\, was co-created during the darkest\, most terrifying times in the region\, as an act of creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice. \nFor half a decade\, Basel Adra\, a Palestinian activist\, films his community of Masafer Yatta being destroyed by Israel’s occupation\, as he builds an unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist who wants to join his fight. No Other Land is an unflinching account of a community’s mass expulsion and acts as a creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice. \nReserved seating tickets ($15\, $10 for students) will be available on February 15th\, online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

SUMMARY:Sequential: The Storytelling Power of Comic Books
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, June 11\, 2025 as Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Sequential: The Storytelling Power of Comic Books. This event is sponsored by Humanities Washington. \nJosh Tuininga (he/him) is an author\, artist\, and designer. After studying fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, he founded an art and design agency\, where he continues to work as creative director. His work has been published in the magazines Communication Arts and HOW Design. Tuininga is the author of the children’s books Why Blue? and Dream On. We Are Not Strangers is his first graphic novel\, which was a 2024 Washington State book award finalist!\n \nDespite the graphic novel’s skyrocketing popularity\, many still view the art form as unsophisticated or less credible than traditional forms of literature. In this talk\, comic artist Josh Tuininga shows how comic books and graphic novels are not only powerful art forms\, but have unique abilities to challenge young readers in surprising ways and can help prepare students for a rapidly changing future.   \nTuininga traces the origins of sequential art—exploring the evolution of the art form and its impact on readers and culture throughout history. He also shares an in-depth look at the sequential art process as he presents his graphic novel\, We Are Not Strangers—a true family story which follows a Jewish immigrant’s efforts to help his Japanese-American neighbors while they are incarcerated during World War II.  \nGesa Power House Theatre is committed to ensuring that the arts are for everyone. Join us for this free community event\, bringing impactful stories to the Walla Walla Valley. Donations are welcome!
