SUMMARY:2019 Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival - Series 2
DESCRIPTION:Each June\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival presents over 30 events around the Walla Walla Valley. The second Festival Series Concert will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday\, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. \n\n \nNight Music. Brings to mind Bob Seger and his evident work regarding “night moves.” However\, we at WWCMF are taking a different tack. Night means all sorts of things. For example\, there are animals that only come out at night. Turns out\, these animals make different sounds than those that inhabit daylight. Béla Bartók was a composer who was famously fascinated by night sounds. His Third String Quartet stands as a great example of music conceived with a nocturnal soundscape in mind. \nBut Bartók is modern\, you say. Yes\, ’tis true. However\, the night occupied classicists\, modernists and romantics alike. That’s why we are placing a little bit of each on this program. I don’t need to say anything about Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik\, do I? And what about poor Schubert? He worked on his “night moves\,” too. Enter the Notturno in E Flat\, D. 897\, which stands as a late masterpiece by Schubert\, as late as we can consider age 31 to be. \nSo\, join us for a little bit of night music. We’ll throw in a little bit of Nachtmusik for free. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM. \nArtists: Norbert Lewandowski\, cello; Christina McGann\, violin; Jingwen Tu\, piano; and the Girsky String Quartet: Natasha Bazhanov\, violin; Timothy Christie\, viola; Artur Girsky\, violin; and Rowena Hammill\, cello. \nGeneral Admission: $20; Family Ticket: $45 (admits two adults and up to four children); Student/Youth Ticket: $10. For more information and tickets\, visit www.wwcmf.org. \n\nAbout the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival:\nFounded in 2007 by Artistic Director Timothy Christie\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival (WWCMF) is a non-profit organization committed to making chamber music accessible to all. SUMMARY:Live Cinema Series: Mixed Program - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of a mixed program by The Royal Ballet on Wednesday\, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \nThe contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is shown in works from three of today’s leading choreographers. \nChristopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour is based around seven couples separating and intermingling\, to music by Vivaldi and Bossi in a score by Ezio Bosso and lit with rich colors suggested by sunset. \n \nMedusa\, a new work created by the acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui\, has its premiere to bring the contemporary truly up-to-date. Please note\, this ballet contains moderate\, stylized physical threat and discreet sex references\, and is not generally recommended for children under the age of 12. \n \nCrystal Pite’s Flight Pattern\, revived for the first time\, uses Górecki’s familiar music and a large dance ensemble for a poignant and passionate exploration of the refugee crisis\, from the plight of millions of displaced people to individual human relationships. \n \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis program has an approximate runtime of 3 hours\, including two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:2019 Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival - Series 1
DESCRIPTION:Each June\, the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival presents over 30 events around the Walla Walla Valley. The first Festival Series Concert will take place at Gesa Power House Theatre on Tuesday\, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. \n\n \nThe opening Festival Series performance of the 2019 June season takes a close look at two distinct but related styles of composition. We have on the one hand the Sonata in D minor\, Op. 75\, by Camille Saint-Saëns\, and the Piano Quintet in A\, Op. 81\, by Antonin Dvořák. One lays the groundwork for the style known as Impressionism\, while the other barters overtly in the compositional movement known as Nationalism\, though no less image-rich than its French counterpart. These pieces were composed about two years and 550 miles apart\, the former in 1885 (Paris)\, the latter in 1887 (Prague). \nHow are they similar? Different? Both are crowd-pleasers (lucky you!)\, and both showcase the respective virtuosity of their instrumentation. As a brief introductory answer to those rhetorical questions\, rhythm is the thing. Saint-Saëns begins to intentionally obscure “natural” rhythmic cycles while Dvořák revels in the most direct and impactful expression of meter. What does all this mean? It means you best attend and enjoy\, because no amount of dissection will reveal the twin joys contained in these Romantic masterpieces. To feel the joy\, you must only listen. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM. \nArtists: Timothy Christie\, viola; Norbert Lewandowski\, cello; Christina McGann\, violin; Stephen Miahky\, violin; Maria Sampen\, violin; and Jingwen Tu\, piano. SUMMARY:Live Cinema Series: "Faust" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Opera House production of Faust on Sunday\, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThere are many versions of the story of Faust\, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power\, but Gounod’s opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust\, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès. Virtuoso leading roles\, a large chorus\, music by Gounod\, sensational sets\, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar\, set in 1870s Paris. Above all\, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognizable numbers\, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 35 minutes including an onscreen introduction and one intermission. Faust is performed in French with English surtitles. Please note that this production contains scenes with brief sexual violence and drug misuse. \nBeer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:A Doll's House\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a local production of the play A Doll’s House\, Part 2 on Thursday\, May 9 and Saturday\, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday\, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. \nKnock knock! Who’s there? It’s Nora! \nIn the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking masterwork\, A Doll’s House\, Nora Helmer closed the door on her husband and family in order to find herself. In A Doll’s House\, Part 2 modern playwright Lucas Hnath imagines that she comes back through that door fifteen years later. Where has she been? What does she want? In a round of provocative and often hilarious skirmishes with the members of her abandoned household\, Nora struggles with the difficult balance between truth to oneself and responsibility to others. \n“[A Doll’s House\, Part 2] delivers explosive laughs while also posing thoughtful questions about marriage\, gender inequality and human rights that reverberate across the almost 140 years since Henrik Ibsen’s original was first produced.\n– Hollywood Reporter \nIn this production of A Doll’s House\, Part 2\, Shauna Bogley is Nora; Kevin Loomer her abandoned husband\, Torvald; Kathryn Bogley their now-grown daughter Emmy; and Terri Trick is Anne Marie\, the nanny who has cared for the household in Nora’s absence. Whitman College Professor Emerita Nancy Simon directs. \n \nNever read Ibsen? Don’t worry. The play works well both as a stand-alone piece and as a riff on the original source material. Don’t miss this Tony-nominated play which is currently the most-produced play of the 2018-2019 season on American stages\, according to American Theatre magazine. \nA Doll’s House\, Part 2 will be staged in three quarter round with all seating on the Gesa Power House Theatre stage. SUMMARY:The Beaver Believers - Encore Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Walla Walla Premiere of the new documentary film The Beaver Believers in March at Gesa Power House Theatre was so successful we are bringing it back for an encore screening on Earth Day\, Monday\, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. \nSometimes the best solutions to the biggest problems can be found in the most unlikely of places. Meet the beaver believers: five scientists and a sassy\, spicy hairdresser\, tackling climate change\, one stick at a time. \nThe Beaver Believers is the urgent yet whimsical story of an unlikely cadre of activists who share a common vision: restoring the North American Beaver\, that most industrious\, ingenious\, bucktoothed engineer\, to the watersheds of the arid West. The Beaver Believers encourage us to embrace a new paradigm for managing our western lands\, one that seeks to partner with the natural world rather than overpower it. As a keystone species\, beaver enrich their ecosystems\, creating the complexity and resiliency our watersheds need to absorb the impacts of climate change. Beavers can show us the way and even do much of the work for us\, if only we can find the humility to trust in the restorative power of nature and our own ability to play a positive role within it. \nShot in 8 western US states\, Mexico\, and Canada\, through desert drought\, raging wildfires\, spring floods\, and wetland tranquility\, this film will change the way you think about climate change and inspire you to take a bite out of the challenges we face\, one stick at a time. Learn more and watch the film trailer at www.thebeaverbelievers.com. \n \nDirector Sarah Koenigsberg\, of Tensegrity Productions in Walla Walla\, WA\, is a filmmaker\, photographer\, and educator whose work focuses on stories of art\, environment\, and community in the American West. Her films and teaching cross disciplines\, illuminating the power of storytelling as a medium through which to explore complex science and policy issues. Her commercial clients include the US Forest Service\, the National Park Service\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory\, the US Department of Energy\, Discovery Channel Canada\, Grand Canyon Trust\, and the River Management Society\, but she’s proud to produce films of local relevance too\, in support of Friends of Children of Walla Walla\, The Health Center at Lincoln\, and Trilogy Recovery Community. Koenigsberg’s work has screened across North America\, at the National Climate Adaptation Forum\, the North American Congress for Conservation Biology\, the Banff Mountain Film Festival\, the International Wildlife Film Festival\, the Portland EcoFilm Festival\, and the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. A short cut of The Beaver Believers is currently screening worldwide as part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. \n \nReserved seating tickets ($15-$10) for this event are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:The Beaver Believers - Walla Walla Premiere Screening
DESCRIPTION:See the Walla Walla Premiere of the new documentary film The Beaver Believers at Gesa Power House Theatre on Wednesday\, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. \nSometimes the best solutions to the biggest problems can be found in the most unlikely of places. Meet the beaver believers: five scientists and a sassy\, spicy hairdresser\, tackling climate climate change\, one stick at a time. \nShot in 8 western US states\, Mexico\, and Canada\, through desert drought\, raging wild fires\, spring floods\, and wetland tranquility\, this film will change the way you think about climate change and inspire you to take a bite out of the challenges we face\, one stick at a time. \n \nReserved seating tickets for this event are SOLD OUT. SUMMARY:Ímar - Irish/Celtic Band
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents Celtic/Irish band Ímar on Sunday\, March 17 (Saint Patrick’s Day) at 2:00 p.m. \nThe five members of Ímar have been awarded many top prizes in Celtic music\, including nine All-Ireland and eight All-Britain titles. Their sound is mainly traditional Irish music with some contemporary and original compositions. The band were BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners in 2018 and were nominated for “Band of the Year” at the 2018 Scots Trad Music Awards. \n \n★★★★★ “Genuinely jaw-dropping collective virtuosity supplied frills to burn”\n~ The Scotsman \n“Totally invigorating and uplifting”\n~ Bright Young Folk \n \nAdam Brown (bodhrán)\, Adam Rhodes (bouzouki)\, Mohsen Amini (concertina)\, Ryan Murphy (uilleann pipes) and Tomás Callister (fiddle) share a strong background in Irish music – although only Murphy actually hails from Ireland; Rhodes and Callister are from the Isle of Man\, whilst Amini is a Glasgow native\, and Brown originally from Suffolk. These foundations underpin many of Ímar’s distinctive qualities\, in both instrumentation and material. Ímar’s unmistakable synergy\, however\, centers on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland\, Ireland and the Isle of Man. All three places once shared the same Gaelic language\, and a similar\, clearly potent\, kinship endures between their musical traditions. \nBeer and wine will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. No outside food or beverages allowed. \nReserved seating tickets ($28) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Live Cinema Series: "La Traviata" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Opera House production of La Traviata on Sunday\, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nRichard Eyre’s beautiful production provides the perfect setting for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love. From the thrill of unexpected romance to a heartbreaking reconciliation that comes too late. Alfredo falls in love in with the courtesan Violetta in glamorous Paris society\, but underneath the surface run darker undercurrents\, leading to a tragic ending. The opera’s wealth of melodies includes the famous Brindisi and the exuberant “Sempre libera” – both showing the lyricism of Italian opera at its most immediately appealing. \nRichard Eyre’s production for The Royal Opera brings out all the emotional color\, from the giddy discovery of love\, through painful confrontation to the inevitable conclusion. Lavish period sets and costumes enhance the reality of a moving story based on true life. \nThe cast of this production includes Ermonela Jaho as Violetta\, Charles Castronovo as Alfredo Germont\, and Plácido Domingo as Giorgio Germont. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 35 minutes including an onscreen introduction and two intermissions. La Traviata is performed in Italian with English surtitles. \nBeer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. SUMMARY:The Moms' Network Comedy Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 9 for the 4th Annual Comedy Night to benefit the Moms’ Network of Walla Walla. Per tradition\, Comedy Night will open the event at 7:00 p.m. with a Lip Sync Sing-Off then we will laugh the night away with Emily Richman. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. \n \nEmily Richman is a comedian\, a theatre actor and director\, a public speaker\, and an ordained minister. She’s still trying to decide what she wants to be when she grows up. She’s 38\, so she has plenty of time. Emily grew up in the nuclear hills of Eastern Washington State and somewhere around her mid 20’s realized a dream she never knew she had when she went up her first time at a comedy open mic. She has been hooked ever since. Her comedy tackles her experience as a woman living in a fat body\, being single\, online dating\, and some of life’s more difficult experiences\, like medical emergencies\, or losing a loved one. Emily finds humor and hope in things that many would be scared to share with a friend\, let alone into a microphone. She wants to share her experiences and let you know that you’re not alone. Yes\, we’re all really this weird. Isn’t it glorious? \nEmily has featured at the Seattle International Comedy Competition Showcase\, the Idaho Laugh Fest and competed in the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas. \n \nTickets ($45 VIP ticket – includes first beverage and premium seating; $25 reserved seating) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nLet your friends know about this event and invite them to join you on Facebook. \nThe Moms’ Network of Walla Walla is a nonprofit based in and serving Walla Walla valley families. Programming ranges from family-friendly events\, ladies’ nights out\, parenting education\, play dates\, and more.
