SUMMARY:Live Cinema Series: Kenneth Branagh's "Romeo and Juliet" (2016)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Live Cinema Series screening of “Romeo and Juliet” on Wednesday\, July 7 at 6:00 p.m. The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s modern and passionate staging of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy returns to select theaters for the first time since it was screened live-to-cinemas in 2016. \n \nRomeo and Juliet is a heartbreaking tale of forbidden love where the longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict. Directed with “seriousness and opulence” (★★★★★The Mail) by Sir Kenneth Branagh and Rob Ashford\, Romeo and Juliet was the fifth play in the inaugural Plays at the Garrick season and was filmed for the big screen in beautiful black and white CinemaScope. Set in 1950s Italy\, this production stars Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as Romeo and Lily James (Downton Abbey) as Juliet\, with Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio and Meera Syal as The Nurse. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. The Live Cinema Series is supported by Shakespeare Walla Walla. \nThis screening has an approximate runtime of 3 hours. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. \nGeneral admission tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? Become a Gesa Power House Theatre Member (highest priority) or sign up for our e-mail list! \n\nThe Live Cinema Series is supported by Shakespeare Walla Walla\, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that aims to make Shakespeare and theater approachable and entertaining to students in eastern Washington and Oregon.  \n \n\nSeason Sponsors: \n         \nKAPP-KVEW TV\, Pacific Power\, Northwest Public Broadcasting\, Hayden Homes \nAdditional support provided by:\nWalla Walla County\, Port of Walla Walla\, City of Walla Walla \nEach Coldwell Banker Office is Independently Owned and Operated

SUMMARY:Little Watts Family Movie - Louisa: An Amazing Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Walla Walla Valley Honda presents a screening of the animated\, family-friendly movie Louisa: An Amazing Adventure on Saturday\, June 26 at 10AM. \n \nJanuary 12\, 1899 was the setting for one of the most astonishing lifeboat recue attempts during one of the worst storms at sea in living memory. This real life story is dramatically told in Louisa: An Amazing Adventure\, and explores the true courage\, determination\, and extraordinary spirit of ordinary people trying to save the lives of strangers in need. The animation style resembled that of an oil painting brought to life and the adventure is narrated by the coxswain’s daughter\, May\, voiced by acclaimed actor Celia Imrie (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). \nLouisa: An Amazing Adventure is currently touring festivals and recently won Best Animation Feature at the Moscow International Children’s Film Festival. \nThis Little Watts Family Movie is recommended for ages 8 and up and has a runtime of about an hour. \nGeneral admission tickets ($12 adults\, $8 Youth 12 and under) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: A Valley Divided (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:(click here for Spanish translation)\nGesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of the 2021 documentary A Valley Divided on Wednesday\, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nIn the Yakima Valley\, the nation’s fruit basket\, where populations are increasingly majority-Latino\, elected representatives are still overwhelmingly white. \nA Valley Divided explores the ways in which the Latino community in Eastern Washington is finding its voice and demanding equal representation at the ballot box. The new documentary\, directed by Madeline Gunderson\, reveals the entrenchment of decades of political discrimination and holds up a mirror to the larger story of a changing United States. \nAlthough Yakima County’s population is about 50 percent Hispanic\, the county had had just one Latino county commissioner in its history. A 2020 lawsuit against Yakima County alleges that its at-large voting system dilutes the agency of Latinos\, in violation of the state Voting Rights Act. and pushes for ranked choice voting. \nGeneral admission tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Seating for each screening is capped at 100 patrons\, as allowed under Washington’s Safe Start Plan. It’s an experience worth leaving the couch for! \n\nSeason Sponsors: \n         \nKAPP-KVEW TV\, Pacific Power\, Northwest Public Broadcasting\, Hayden Homes \nAdditional support provided by:\nWalla Walla County\, Port of Walla Walla\, City of Walla Walla \nEach Coldwell Banker Office is Independently Owned and Operated

SUMMARY:The Paper Tigers (film)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a screening of just-released action-comedy feature film The Paper Tigers on Friday\, May 21 at 7:00PM with an encore on Wednesday\, May 26 at 7:00PM. Each Power House Movie screening is accompanied by an exclusive conversation between Director of Film Programming Warren Etheredge and the filmmakers. \n \nAs teenagers\, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy)\, Hing (Ron Yuan)\, and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. They trained together\, fought together\, and planned to become the next great martial arts masters. Life\, as they say\, had other plans. Fast forward 25 years\, and each has grown into a washed-up\, middle-aged man\, seemingly one kick away from pulling a hamstring – and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends. But when their old master is murdered\, the trio reunites\, soon learning that avenging their sifu will require conquering old grudges (and a dangerous hitman still armed with ample knee cartilage) if they are to honorably defend his legacy. \n“Yes\, there are plenty of terrific fight scenes\, but The Paper Tigers offers big laughs\, easily identifiable characters and plenty of insight on living with your mistakes and imperfections…”\n– Matthew Kiernan\, Fantasia Film Festival \nThe Paper Tigers received its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival and had its limited theatrical release on May 7. \n\nWinner: Special Jury Award for Best Editing\, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival\nWinner: Audience Award\, Boston Asian American Film Festival\n\nFilmmaker Tran Quoc Bao (writer/director/editor) was mentored by master action director Corey Yuen (The Transporter)\, who instilled Bao with an approach to action that draws on story and character\, and doesn’t rely solely on spectacle. His editing credits include Cho Lon\, one of Southeast Asia’s highest-budgeted action blockbusters\, and Jackpot\, a heartfelt comedy selected as Vietnam’s official entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Academy Awards. \nIn celebration of Gesa Power House Theatre’s 10th Anniversary (on May 19)\, tickets to this weekend’s events are priced at only $10 per screening or block of short films! Please join us in celebrating the first decade of events at the Power House as we look forward to the next 10 years of art-filled performances. \nGeneral admission tickets are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Best of the 2020 Walla Walla Movie Crush
DESCRIPTION:The Walla Walla Movie Crush was prepared for the fourth annual festival of short films in July 2020\, however\, the pandemic had other plans for Walla Walla. Nearly a year later\, we are now able to be open for socially-distanced events and are delighted to share the highlights from 2020’s cancelled festival. Gesa Power House Theatre presents a special “Best of the 2020 Walla Walla Movie Crush” screening event on Saturday\, May 22. \n \nJust like the annual 3-day festival in July\, screenings will be arranged in one-hour thematic segments of short films as follows: \nBlock #1 (1PM-5PM): \n1PM: AFTER-ACTION REVIEW\npresented by Micki & Bryce Breitenstein \nPoliticians provide reasons for going to war\, historians discuss the geo-political impacts. Too few\, however\, are concerned or charged with evaluating what happens to the women and men who serve and to those who survive war. Here\, American veterans from multiple conflicts and Korean children recall what happened\, question why it did and wonder how to move forward healthfully. \n2PM: MORAL ACCOUNTING \nUltimately\, we may or may not be judged by a higher power\, but while we are alive\, it’s up to each of us to hold ourselves and others accountable\, spiritually as much as legally. Here\, war crimes\, acts of censorship\, xenophobic policies and climate crises are addressed by individuals eager to balance the books and pull us out of the moral red. \n3PM: PHONING IT IN \nWe all have our hang-ups\, but our attachment to our smartphones may be moving from habit to addiction. Can we live without them? Here\, New Yorkers and Californians\, siblings and spouses\, technophobes and influencers — heck\, even Green Day! —all try to put down their devices or be put down for them. \n4PM: BLACK LIVES & WHITE LIES \nDr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. said: “Three hundred years of humiliation\, abuse and deprivation cannot be expected to find voice in a whisper.” Thus\, a cry becomes a shout becomes a protest becomes a revolution. Those who shout\, eventually\, will be heard. Those who remain quiet\, ultimately\, will lose their voices. Here\, BIPOC women and men spill their stories\, while white folks whisper theirs… \nBlock #2 (7PM-10PM): \n7PM: ANGER MISMANAGEMENT \nDo men ever learn how to deal with their emotions properly? Evidence suggests that many men have no idea what do wither their feelings and certainly haven’t found enough outlets for their ire. Here\, scientists and students\, office workers and buskers\, an actor and an entrepreneur all release steam in less than healthy\, though sometimes humorous ways. \n8PM: AND THE BEAT GOES ON? \nIf music calms the savage breast\, what happens when it stops? If we fail to find our daily rhythms\, can there only be discord? Here\, a municipal school district\, a bickering couple\, an exiled punk\, a troubled drummer and a wary dreamer… face the music and the absence of it. \n9PM: INTIMACY COORDINATION \nIf you want to round the bases\, you’ve got to step into the batter’s box and learn to swing… the right way. Here\, an American gigolo\, a speed-dater\, a co-worker\, the cuckold\, bros\, sistahs\, neighbors and the common housefly learn how to get their game on before they get their groove on. \nGeneral admission tickets ($10 per block or $15 for a day pass) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nSeating for each screening is capped at 100 patrons\, as allowed under Washington’s Safe Start Plan. Additional precautions including required mask use and physical distancing between households will be observed. \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Beyond the Glass (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a screening of local documentary film Beyond the Glass on Wednesday\, May 12 at 7:00PM. (There will not be a Friday\, May 7 screening due to conflicts with Spring Release Weekend.) This screening will be accompanied by an exclusive pre-recorded conversation between Director of Film Programming Warren Etheredge and the filmmakers. The runtime on this event will be about an hour. \nBeyond the Glass was produced by Whitman College graduate Jackson Clough about local residents Rick and Mosseta Brown\, who operate a local boxing club for at-risk youth in the area. When Rick Brown emerged from decades of drug addiction and run-ins with the law\, he was determined to forge a new path forward as a man of faith and as a productive citizen. He and his wife opened Rick’s Boxing Club in College Place\, where they strive to give kids an alternative to getting involved with drugs and gangs. \nRick’s Boxing Club offers free memberships to students ages 8 through college as long as they maintain at least a “C” average in their school courses and agree to perform some community service projects. \nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Seating for each screening is capped at 100 patrons\, as allowed under Washington’s Safe Start Plan. Not only do we showcase award-winning festival favorites\, feature-length narratives\, documentaries\, and undiscovered gems\, we pair them with exclusive content from the movie makers themselves – most often in conversation with our Director of Film Programming\, Warren Etheredge. SUMMARY:Halfway to Zen (film)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a screening of the independent film Halfway to Zen on Friday\, April 30 at 7:00PM with an encore screening on Wednesday\, May 5 at 7:00PM. \n \nHalfway to Zen is a drama about a fractured family coming together to raise their collective middle fingers at the odds they’ve each been dealt. \nAfter release from prison\, Nick is trying to walk a straight line by taking care of his father\, Pop\, who’s forgotten what a lousy dad he once was. When Nick is reunited with his 11 year-old daughter Edie (who insists she’s now Eddie) and his ex-wife\, Vick (who’s engaged to a woman)\, this ragtag team of bulletproof misfits has to relearn everything they know about what makes a family. \nHalfway to Zen was produced by Wonder Wheel Productions a family-driven independent film company consisting of Toby Poser\, John Adams\, and daughters Lulu and Zelda Adams. The small family creative team does it all: casting writing\, videography\, acting\, directing\, editing\, and film crew. The family have been making films since 2010\, each successful in its own right on the film festival circuit. Halfway to Zen\, their fourth film\, is unrated\, but contains strong language. \nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Triggered (documentary film)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a work-in progress screening of the upcoming documentary film Triggered on Friday\, April 23 at 7:00PM with an encore screening on Wednesday\, April 28 at 7:00PM. \n \nA Pacific Northwest artist with a stellar pedigree\, Charles Krafft was riding high as the bad boy of ceramic sculpture until\, in 2013\, a Seattle newspaper published a piece by local art critic Jen Graves\, labeling Krafft as a holocaust denier and white nationalist. The response was instantaneous and foreshadowed the rise of cancel culture: within months\, galleries and museums the world-over removed Krafft’s work from exhibition and cancelled his participation in shows\, symposia\, and events. \nWhere there had previously been a casual acceptance of his irreverent work\, which included exquisite pieces of Delftware china featuring Nazi iconography\, suddenly Krafft found himself shunned by friends and colleagues who had previously laughed at his pleas for “forgiveness” for the Third Reich\, and who had previously defended his right to make racist and homophobic comments. \nFollowing nearly two decades of filming\, director Nadeem Uddin reveals that the truth is far more complex. Triggered is the story of how the Seattle art world ignored\, enabled\, and were even amused by his descent into a rabbit hole of conspiracy and white nationalism. The film also explores how Krafft’s growing obsession with Holocaust revisionism closely tracks with the growth of a massive glioblastoma tumor in his brain. \nBefore Krafft died in 2020\, he gave filmmakers access to his own archives and granted permission for an in-depth portrayal of his life and work. \n“While his obsession with Nazis is unpleasant\,” says director Nadeem Uddin\, “And his holocaust revisionism disgusting\, Charles Krafft was also a unique and important figure in the cultural life of the Northwest.” \nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:The Falconer (documentary film)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a screening of the award-winning documentary film The Falconer on Friday\, April 9 at 7:00PM with an encore screening on Wednesday\, April 14 at 7:00PM. \n \nThis intimate portrait film follows master falconer Rodney Stotts on his mission to build a bird sanctuary and provide access to nature for his stressed community. The Falconer weaves Rodney’s present-day mission with the story of his past\, both of which are deeply rooted in issues of social and environmental injustice\, and consistently orient the viewer to his worldview: nature heals. The Falconer captures beauty and hope in a forgotten corner of our nation’s capital\, as Rodney takes the time to break through to those too often dismissed as “hard to reach”. \nThis is a story of second chances: for injured birds of prey\, for an abandoned plot of land\, for a group of teenagers who have dropped out of high school\, and for Rodney himself as he seeks to promote a simple but powerful idea – everyone deserves access to nature. \n“Rodney Stotts puts everything he has into trying to make his community a better place. My hope is that after witnessing this struggle firsthand\, [the] audience will aspire to do the same.”\n-Annie Kaempfer\, Director (The Falconer) \nThe Falconer has been recognized at numerous film festivals\, including: \n\n1st Prize Storyteller’s Award – Destiny City Film Festival (2021)\nBest Outdoor/Environmental Feature – BendFilm (2020)\n\nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Personhood (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a screening of the award-winning documentary film Personhood: Policing Pregnant Women in America on Friday\, March 26 at 7:00PM with an encore screening on Wednesday\, March 31 at 7:00PM. \n \n\nWinner: 2020 Silver Gavel Award for Documentaries – American Bar Association\nWinner: 2020 Golden Badger Award – Wisconsin Film Festival\n\nPersonhood tells a different reproductive rights story – one that ripples far beyond the right to choose and into the lives of every pregnant person in America. Like a moment from the chilling Handmaid’s Tale\, Tammy Loertscher’s fetus was given an attorney\, while the courts denied Tammy her constitutional rights. In this timely documentary\, we see her sent to jail\, and then forced to challenge a Wisconsin law that eroded her privacy\, her right to due process\, and her body sovereignty. Through her story\, Personhood reframes the abortion debate to encompass the growing system of laws that criminalize and police pregnant people. At the intersection of the erosion of women’s rights\, the war on drugs\, and mass incarceration\, Tammy’s experience reveals the dangerous consequences of these little-known laws for American women and families. \nPersonhood explores this urgent issue from all sides including the fetal personhood movement\, social justice advocates\, medical professionals and legal experts. Through this collection of voices\, the film calls for a necessary shift in dialog that looks beyond abortion and focuses on the far-reaching impacts of anti-choice efforts on women who have no intention of ending their pregnancies. \nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.
