DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theater proudly presents “An Evening of Ukrainian Shorts\,” a benefit screening of short films on Wednesday\, March 1 at 7 p.m. This series is curated by Director of Film Programming Warren Etheredge and brought to you in part by Walla Walla Movie Crush. \nThe next installment of our Power House Movie series\, “An Evening of Ukrainian Shorts\,” brings to your local screen a selection of short films created\, directed\, and produced by Ukrainian filmmakers. In this line-up of deeply moving pieces is  “Diaper Cake” (directed by Anastasia Babenko)\, a short following two young people and their baby having to grow up fast during difficult times\, and “Liturgy of Anti-Tank Obstacles” (directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk)\, a film exploring the lives of sculptors in west Ukraine who previously made religious statues and now fin themselves retraining to build anti-tank obstacles to help fend off the Russian invasion. \nThese short films stand as a testament to the power and resilience of the Ukrainian people no matter the circumstances. As Director Anastasia Babenko puts it\, “Ukraine is not a ruin. It’s a place of love\, power\, and freedom. ‘Life will win over death\, and the light will win over darkness.'” \nAddressing her short film\, Director Anastasia Babenko said\, “‘Diaper Cake’ is a love letter to my sister Katia and to my nephew Zakhar\, and more broadly\, to all Ukrainian women and children. Since the war broke out in my home country\, my perception of the film has changed drastically. Our story is set in a maternity hospital\, and I can’t help thinking about the maternity hospital in Mariupol destroyed by a Russian airstrike on March 9\, 2022. As of April 2022\, at least 217 children were killed\, and 393 children were injured in this war. Those who died in that horrible attack resemble our characters a lot. They were young people at their most intimate\, pure and hopeful\, happy to bring another life into this world. My sister and my five-year-old nephew are now refugees. They had to leave their home like millions of Ukrainians. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 24\, 2023 at 7 p.m.\, the Gesa Power House Theatre will present The Tel Aviv Wind Quintet. \nThe Tel Aviv Wind Quintet was founded in 2009 by young Israeli musicians\, and quickly established itself as a leading chamber ensemble\, excelling in rich repertoire and multidisciplinary works involving movement and theatre. Today\, the quintet performs more than 30 concerts each season all around Israel\, including its most prestigious concert venues\, such as the YMCA (at the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival)\, the Jerusalem Music Centre\, the Mormon University\, Henry Crown Hall in the Jerusalem Theater\, the Israel Conservatory and the Tel-Aviv Museum. Special emphasis is placed on creating perennial cultural and educational programs for underprivileged communities in the periphery of Israel\, from Kfar Blum to Mitzpe Ramon. International tours brought the Quintet to Switzerland\, France\, Germany\, Kazakhstan\, and China. \n“One of the leading and most interesting ensembles in the local scene – the Tel Aviv Wind Quintet… five talented musicians present a noble exchange of chamber music.”\n—Gali Margalit\, Spot It Magazine\, 4.6.2020 \nThe quintet is a member of the Independent Musicians Organization of the Felicja Blumental association. Some follow prescribed customs\, others form new traditions with the passing of loved ones. The Mourner’s Kaddish\, the Jewish prayer recited in honor of the deceased never mentions death or dying\, but instead proclaims the greatness of G-d. It encourages reciters to not wallow in grief or ignore the impact of loss altogether. In fact\, the word kaddish actually means sanctification in Aramaic\, similar to the Hebrew word kadosh\, or holy. This program of short films examines the metaphorical progression and three stages of Jewish mourning rituals—from Aninut to Shiva to Sheloshim—noting the passing of parents\, grandparents\, neighbors\, strangers\, and even a beached whale. Today\, outside of prison\, Kim and Michelle are doing the difficult work of unraveling Michelle’s history\, of telling the story of Michelle’s traumatic childhood and her adverse experiences in the criminal justice system. With the support of Kim\, Michelle realizes her own voice and strength. Throughout the film Michelle’s artwork provides her own depiction of the trauma she survived as well as a means to her recovery. Ultimately\, “Being Michelle” is a story of redemption. (pronounced AH-lay oop͞ s) which brings back classic vaudeville acts\, with a comedy twist.
