SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Ballet production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on Wednesday\, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to Danza Classica Ballet Foundation. \n \nAt a garden party on a sunny afternoon\, Alice is surprised to see her parents’ friend Lewis Carroll transform into a white rabbit. When she follows him down a rabbit hole events become curiouser and curiouser…As Alice journeys through Wonderland\, she encounters countless strange creatures. She’s swept off her feet by the charming Knave of Hearts\, who’s on the run for stealing the tarts. Confusion piles upon confusion. Then Alice wakes with a start. Was it all a daydream? \nChristopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour\, stage magic and inventive\, sophisticated choreography. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative\, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real. \nAlice encounters a cast of extraordinary and instantly recognizable characters\, from the highly strung Queen of Hearts – who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty’s famous Rose Adage – to a playing-card corps de ballet\, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen\, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best\, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment. \nThis production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. The screening runs approximately 2 hours 50 minutes including two intervals and an onscreen introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Additional donations for Danza Classica Ballet Foundation will be accepted. \nRSVP on Facebook \n\nAbout Danza Classica Ballet Foundation\nCreated as a sister organization to The Dance Center\, Danza Classica Ballet Foundation fosters and advances the art of ballet in the Walla Walla Valley by providing resources for ballet education\, enhancing learning opportunities through in-studio and master classes\, local and visiting performances\, travel\, and ballet study scholarship assistance\, as well as promoting appreciation for classical ballet in our community. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Opera production of “La bohème” on Wednesday\, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nWhen Rodolfo\, a penniless poet\, meets Mimì\, a seamstress\, they fall instantly in love. SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead (and Costume Contest)
DESCRIPTION:Too old for trick-or-treating? Still love to dress up? Like horror films? \nGesa Power House Theatre will screen a classic horror film\, followed by a costume contest and after party this Halloween\, Tuesday\, October 31 starting at 7:00 p.m. \nHorror Film:\nGeorge R. Romero’s 1968 film “Night of the Living Dead” is a cult classic credited with popularizing the concept of “zombies” as we think of them today. It was criticized at the time for its explicitly gory special effects\, and ushered in a new wave of “splatter” horror films. The film’s plot follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from flesh eating monsters – the dead come back to life. \n \nCostume Contest:\nContestants for the costume contest are encouraged to show up by 6:30 p.m. to give the judges more time to evaluate their costumes. Fun photo opportunities will be available at several “selfie stations” set up around the theater. Following the film screening (at approximately 8:45 p.m.)\, trophies and prizes will be awarded in the categories of Best Costume\, Funniest\, Most Creative and Sexiest. \nAfter Party: \nStay for an After Party in the Electric Lounge hosted by Chardonnay (Jimmy Vaughan). Anyone in costume will receive drink discounts all night. \nGeneral admission tickets ($13) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n  \n\nThis event is supported by: \n \nThe 2017 Gesa Power House Theatre Season receives support from: \n \n   \nCourtyard Marriott\, Inland Cellular\,\nMcCurley Integrity Toyota of Walla Walla\, Pacific Power

SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Magic Flute" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Opera production of The Magic Flute on Wednesday\, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nMozart’s glorious opera The Magic Flute is brought enchantingly to life in David McVicar’s production with beautiful sets by John Macfarlane. \nPrince Tamino promises the Queen of the Night that he will rescue her daughter Pamina from the enchanter Sarastro. He begins his quest\, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno – but all is not as it seems… \nDavid McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals\, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score\, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty\, folksong-like arias. \nAs well as being a comedy\, The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ – a great opera. \nThis screening runs about 3 hours 10 minutes including one interval and a 15-minute introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Film: "Food Evolution"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the recent documentary film “Food Evolution” on Wednesday\, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nNarrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson\, “Food Evolution” wrestles with the emotions and the science driving one of the most heated arguments of our time – the controversy surrounding GMOs and food. Academy Award-nominated directo Scott Hamilton Kennedy (The Garden\, Fame High\, OT: Our Town) travels from Hawaiian papaya groves\, to banana farms in Uganda\, to the cornfields of Iowa in search of the truth. \nThe GMO debate is brutally polarizing\, marked by passion\, suspicion\, and confusion. Both pro and anti camps claim science is on their side. Who’s right? \n“Food Evolution” shows how easily misinformation\, confusion and fear can overwhelm objective analysis. How do we ensure that our food supply is safe\, and that everyone has enough to eat? How do we feed the world while also protecting the planet? Has genetic engineering increased or decreased pesticide use? Are GMO foods bad for your health? And\, most importantly\, what data\, evidence and sources are we using to approach these important questions? \nWhile the passionate advocates in the film are all concerned with the stewardship of safe\, nutritious food for the planet\, their differing views over what constitutes the truth have pit them against each other\, rendering the very subject of food itself into an ideological battleground. \nEnlisting subject matter experts as well as farmers and scientists from around the world\, this bold documentary separates the hype and emotion from the science and data to unravel the debate around food\, and help audiences reach their own conclusions. \nThe film was commissioned and funded by The Institute of Food Technologists\, a nonprofit scientific society of more than 17\,000 members from around the world. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n“Food Evolution” runs approximately 90 minutes. SUMMARY:Washington Film Premiere: "A Very Sordid Wedding"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will host the Washington Premiere of the 2017 independent film “A Very Sordid Wedding” on Friday\, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. Two of the filmmakers\, Del Shores (writer/director) and Emerson Collins (producer/actor) will be in attendance. A portion of every ticket sale will be donated to the Triple Point program (details below). \n \n“A Very Sordid Wedding” (2017) is a direct sequel to “Sordid Lives” (2000) and takes place seventeen years later in the same small Texas community with many of the same memorable characters. Sissy Hickey is reading the Bible\, cover to cover\, trying to make some kind of sense out of what it really says about gay people. Her niece Latrelle Williamson has divorced her husband Wilson who has taken up with a hot young gold digger. Latrelle’s now out and proud gay son Ty is on his way back to town with his black man and news of their own. Her sister LaVonda is still cussin’ and drankin’ and is being blackmailed to sit with the sick and afflicted. LaVonda’s best friend Noleta meets a hot younger man while visiting her awful mama in the hospital. G.W.\, sporting new fiberglass legs\, but is still feeling guilty and mourning Peggy. Nearly incoherent barfly Juanita is now obsessed with the royal family while Wardell and Odell still bicker at the bar. Tammy Wynette champion Brother Boy is working at a tragic little gay bar\, having added Loretta and Dolly to his new medley act “We Three Queens of Oper-y Are” until a chance meeting with a dangerous criminal forces him out on the run. Again. \nThe cast includes many memorable characters and actors\, including Leslie Jordan (“Will & Grace”)\, Caroline Rhea (“Sabrina: The Teenage Witch”)\, Alec Mapa (“Ugly Betty”)\, and comedian Whoopi Goldberg. \n \nAs the sordid saga continues\, an anniversary memorial service is being planned in honor of Peggy at Bubba’s Bar while the Southside Baptist Church is planning an “Anti-Equality Rally” to protest the advancement of same-sex marriage. Both events are to take place on the same night\, so the cast of colorful characters are all on a collision course for shenanigans and fireworks! \nAs the original film dealt with coming out in a conservative southern world\, “A Very Sordid Wedding” explores the questions\, bigotry and the fallout of what happens when gay marriage comes to communities and families that are not quite ready to accept it. Bigoted “religious freedom\,” marriage equality and cultural acceptance are all explored with Del Shores’ trademark approach to using comedy and his much-beloved “Sordid Lives” characters to deal with these important current social issues and the very real process of accepting your family for who they are instead of who you want them to be. \n“A Very Sordid Wedding” is unrated\, but does contain adult language and situations. Recommended for 18+. The film runs 1 hour 50 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. \nVisiting Filmmakers:\n\n\n\n\nDel Shores (Writer/Director/Producer) has written\, directed\, and produced successfully across studio and independent film\, network\, and cable television and regional and national touring theater. He wrote “Sordid Lives” as a play which opened in 1996\, then wrote and directed the film version released in 2000. He created\, wrote\, directed\, and executive produced “Sordid Lives: The Series” which premiered on Viacom’s LOGO network in 2008. Most recently\, Shores wrote and directed “A Very Sordid Wedding” which is currently in limited theatrical release.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmerson Collins (Actor/Producer) is an actor\, producer\, and TV personality. He produced and starred in “Southern Baptist Sissies” (also written by Del Shores) and won Best Actor in a Feature Film from the Red Dirt International Film Festival. Collins co-produced “Sordid Lives: The Series” for LOGO\, produced the national theatrical tour of “Sordid Lives” and “Southern Baptist Sissies”\, and directed and produced DVD live tapings of several of Del Shores’ one man shows. He appears in “A Very Sordid Wedding” as the character Billy Joe Dobson.\n\n\n\n\nTicket Information: (RSVP on Facebook)\nReserved seating tickets ($20 Adults\, $15 Students) will be available to Members on Saturday\, July 15\, to Email Subscribers on Friday\, July 21\, and to the public on Saturday\, July 29. Tickets will be available separately for “Sordid Lives” and “A Very Sordid Wedding“\, however\, buying both together is the best deal. \nVIP Ticket Package ($40):\n\npremium reserved seating for both films\nprivate meet and greet reception with the filmmakers – 6PM Friday\, September 15\nsouvenir poster\nfree popcorn\n\nTicket Combo ($20 Adults\, $15 Students):\n\nreserved seating for both films\n\nGesa Power House Theatre will donate $2 from every ticket sold to Children’s Home Society of Washington’s Triple Point of Walla Walla – a local youth group for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, questioning\, intersex and straight ally youth\, age 13-18 years old. Triple Point exists to empower LGBTQI+ youth and their straight allies by providing education\, safety\, support and acceptance to end isolation. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Herb Alpert & Lani Hall
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents Herb Alpert & Lani Hall in concert on Sunday\, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. – sponsored in part by Doyle Electric. \nHerb Alpert — the iconic trumpeter\, composer\, record label executive\, artist and philanthropist — has had five #1 hits\, released fifteen Gold albums\, fourteen Platinum albums and has sold over 72 million records. After more than 50 years of ground-breaking accomplishments\, he continues to be a prolific musician. He recently released a Grammy-nominated album of new material\, inspired by electronic and dance music\, called “Human Nature” – his fourth album of new music in just three years. It features five new original compositions and Alpert’s signature re–imagining of classics like Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature\,” Burt Bacharach’s “Alfie” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart\,” and Bacharach and Elvis Costello’s “Look Up Again.” \n \nHerb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass propelled Alpert’s sound into the pop music limelight\, at one point outselling the Beatles two to one. In 1966\, they achieved the since-unmatched feat of simultaneously having four albums in the Top 10 and five in the Top 20. Alpert also has the distinction of being the only artist who has had a #1 instrumental and vocal single. \n \nTo honor this landmark year\, 24 of his classic albums were remastered from the original analog tapes and reissued for the first time\, several of which have been out of print for a number of years. On the heels of the reissues\, 13 of Herb’s albums returned to the Billboard Top 50 Catalog Jazz albums chart. 11 of his titles are currently in the Top 100 Jazz albums on Amazon. Billboard also listed Herb at #7 on their Greatest Of All Time Billboard 200 Artists list this year. Summer\, 2017\, Herb releases two new albums\, “Music Volume 1” and “The Christmas Wish\,” recorded with symphony and chorus. \nA 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee\, Alpert has also dedicated his life to philanthropy\, funding programs that include arts education\, jazz and support to professional artists. Through the Herb Alpert Foundation\, he has endowed the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music\, the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts and most recently the Music Department at Los Angeles City College. This gift to LACC provides free attendance\, additional private lessons and further financial aid to music majors. Herb has also established the Herb Alpert Scholarships for Emerging Young Artists at California State Summer School for the Arts\, and the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts administered by Cal Arts for the past 22 years. \nGrammy Award-winning vocalist and producer Lani Hall joins her husband\, Herb Alpert\, on the current concert tour. \nLani Hall started her singing career in 1966\, as the lead singer of Sergio Mendes’s break through group\, Brasil ’66. She has the distinction of recording more than 22 albums in three different languages (English\, Portuguese and Spanish)\, and in 1983\, she sang the title song for the James Bond film\, Never Say Never Again. In 1986 Hall won her first Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance for her album\, “Es Facil Amar”. Hall picked up her second Grammy Award as producer on Herb Alpert’s 2013 album\, “Steppin’ Out”. \n \nWhile her singing career took her on the road\, Hall also focused on her writing—committing to the page her personal impressions of the world around her. Sergio Mendes further expanded her writing career by asking Lani to write the English lyrics for many of the band’s Brazilian songs. Her debut book\, “Emotional Memoirs & Short Stories”\, compiles 10 short stories from 30 years of writing short fiction and true stories from her life—all woven together by a connecting personal narrative\, with the city of Chicago as the backdrop. Her characters are intelligent\, modern women struggling to navigate the uncertain waters of adultery\, therapy\, cosmetic surgery\, postpartum depression and their own sexuality. \n \nAnd now\, with the release of her audio book\, “Emotional Memoirs & Short Stories”\, Hall has mixed her two creative expressions to make one total experience. With her emotional narration at the forefront\, she has placed a unique\, musically scored soundtrack\, creating an emotional landscape of music\, to all 10 stories\, making each chosen scene come to vivid life. \nSince 2006\, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall have been touring with their band to sell out performances. \nThis concert is SOLD OUT! SUMMARY:Walla Walla Movie Crush
DESCRIPTION:Go to the movies\, and be a part of Walla Walla History! \n2 days. 13 hours of programming. 11 World Premieres. 88 short movies… all new to you. Dozens of award-winners\, including an Oscar® nominee. The 1st annual Walla Walla Movie Crush\, America’s most intoxicating blend of short cinema\, coming to the Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, July 1 and 2. \nSee and hear Stephen King (THE SHINING)\, Tituss Burgess (THE UNBREAKBALE KIMMY SCHMIDT)\, Jennifer Lawrence (THE HUNGER GAMES)\, John Turturro (DO THE RIGHT THING)\, Lena Dunham (GIRLS)\, Mary Elizabeth Ellis (IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA)\, Stephen Dorff (BLADE)\, Casey Wilson (SNL)\, Sam Elliott (WE WERE SOLDIERS) and Bobby Cannavale (BOARDWALK EMPIRE). \nRenowned short film expert Warren Etheredge has watched hundreds of short films and selected the very best for you to view\, packaged in hour-long programs with time for conversations about the content with visiting filmmakers. The films range in length from one to 30 minutes\, with most less than 10. Highlights include programs dedicated to veterans’ issues\, sports\, music\, mothers\, social mores\, political discourse and\, of course\, romance… when it goes oh-so-right and oh-so-wrong. \nIf your tastes run a little wilder\, check out Walla Walla After Dark: The Crushening\, a special program of the weird\, the wild\, the bawdy and the bizarre on Saturday\, July 1st at 10pm at El Corazon (37 S Palouse St). \nOn Sunday night\, join us for 10 brand-new short films created specifically for the Walla Walla Movie Crush by these critically-acclaimed directors and filmmaking teams: The Adams Family (HALFWAY TO ZEN)\, Genevieve Anderson (TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE)\, Wendy Jo Carlton (EASY ABBY)\, Rick Castaneda (CEMENT SUITCASE)\, Mtume Gant (WHITE FACE)\, Jadoliv Studios\, Josh Lunden (MODERN DARK)\, Joshua Seftel (WAR\, INC.)\, Jacob Strunk (VALHALLA)\, and Caveh Zahedi (THE SHEIK AND I). When these films hit the screen\, it will be the first time anyone has seen them\, including the festival staff. The Walla Walla Movie Crush Challenge will be followed immediately by the festival’s Closing Night Awards Ceremony. \nFor the full schedule and line-up visit: www.wallawallamoviecrush.com \nTickets will be available online through June 30\, and at the door based on availability. \nThe Walla Walla Movie Crush receives support from The City of Walla Walla\, the Walla Walla Public Library\, Gesa Power House Theatre\, and Washington FilmWorks. All proceeds from the Walla Walla Movie Crush go to support The Red Badge Project. \n  \nFestival Highlights:\nSaturday\, Noon — IMPROPERLY VETTED: Unfortunately\, just because one serves their country doesn’t mean their country serves them. Soldiers may lose their lives on battlefields\, but those who survive may face even greater losses on the home-front. These shorts examine the impact of war on those who fight them and how civilians may better serve those who defend their ways of life. \nSaturday\, 4pm — JOCK & JILL: You needn’t go pro to love sports — heck\, that’s the root meaning of amateur. Those who play for the love of the game always prove themselves champs on the rink\, on the courts\, in the church\, in the crowd\, in the pinball arcade and even in Bryant Park. They shoot\, they score. You watch\, you win! \nSaturday\, 7pm — BLACK LIVES\, MATTERS: The black experience is not monolithic; instead it is as varied as the color spectrum. In order to appreciate the sanctity of individuals\, we must first embrace the wondrous diversity and emotional commonality of the human race. A rodeo star\, a music icon\, an aspiring astronomer\, a grieving mom\, a grave-digger\, a hopeful boat owner and a renowned falconer represent just a small sliver of the possibilities. \nSunday\, 2pm — STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND: Home is where the heart is\, but what about when we have to relocate? Then what? These refugees seek shelter and a new start in unusual environments and with uncommon dignity. \nSunday\, 4pm — HIGHLY ATTUNED: Summer’s here and the time is right to thank those who make the music that has us dancing in the streets\, grooving in the sheets and marching to very different beats. Bowie\, Cobain and the Allmans appear on this short soundtrack as do a few folks — real\, surreal and animated — who you’ve never heard before\, but will be humming for years to come.
