SUMMARY:Walla Walla Movie Crush
DESCRIPTION:Go to the movies\, and be a part of Walla Walla History! \n2 days. 13 hours of programming. 11 World Premieres. 88 short movies… all new to you. Dozens of award-winners\, including an Oscar® nominee. The 1st annual Walla Walla Movie Crush\, America’s most intoxicating blend of short cinema\, coming to the Gesa Power House Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, July 1 and 2. \nSee and hear Stephen King (THE SHINING)\, Tituss Burgess (THE UNBREAKBALE KIMMY SCHMIDT)\, Jennifer Lawrence (THE HUNGER GAMES)\, John Turturro (DO THE RIGHT THING)\, Lena Dunham (GIRLS)\, Mary Elizabeth Ellis (IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA)\, Stephen Dorff (BLADE)\, Casey Wilson (SNL)\, Sam Elliott (WE WERE SOLDIERS) and Bobby Cannavale (BOARDWALK EMPIRE). \nRenowned short film expert Warren Etheredge has watched hundreds of short films and selected the very best for you to view\, packaged in hour-long programs with time for conversations about the content with visiting filmmakers. The films range in length from one to 30 minutes\, with most less than 10. Highlights include programs dedicated to veterans’ issues\, sports\, music\, mothers\, social mores\, political discourse and\, of course\, romance… when it goes oh-so-right and oh-so-wrong. \nIf your tastes run a little wilder\, check out Walla Walla After Dark: The Crushening\, a special program of the weird\, the wild\, the bawdy and the bizarre on Saturday\, July 1st at 10pm at El Corazon (37 S Palouse St). \nOn Sunday night\, join us for 10 brand-new short films created specifically for the Walla Walla Movie Crush by these critically-acclaimed directors and filmmaking teams: The Adams Family (HALFWAY TO ZEN)\, Genevieve Anderson (TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE)\, Wendy Jo Carlton (EASY ABBY)\, Rick Castaneda (CEMENT SUITCASE)\, Mtume Gant (WHITE FACE)\, Jadoliv Studios\, Josh Lunden (MODERN DARK)\, Joshua Seftel (WAR\, INC.)\, Jacob Strunk (VALHALLA)\, and Caveh Zahedi (THE SHEIK AND I). When these films hit the screen\, it will be the first time anyone has seen them\, including the festival staff. The Walla Walla Movie Crush Challenge will be followed immediately by the festival’s Closing Night Awards Ceremony. \nFor the full schedule and line-up visit: www.wallawallamoviecrush.com \nTickets will be available online through June 30\, and at the door based on availability. \nThe Walla Walla Movie Crush receives support from The City of Walla Walla\, the Walla Walla Public Library\, Gesa Power House Theatre\, and Washington FilmWorks. All proceeds from the Walla Walla Movie Crush go to support The Red Badge Project. \n  \nFestival Highlights:\nSaturday\, Noon — IMPROPERLY VETTED: Unfortunately\, just because one serves their country doesn’t mean their country serves them. Soldiers may lose their lives on battlefields\, but those who survive may face even greater losses on the home-front. These shorts examine the impact of war on those who fight them and how civilians may better serve those who defend their ways of life. \nSaturday\, 4pm — JOCK & JILL: You needn’t go pro to love sports — heck\, that’s the root meaning of amateur. Those who play for the love of the game always prove themselves champs on the rink\, on the courts\, in the church\, in the crowd\, in the pinball arcade and even in Bryant Park. They shoot\, they score. You watch\, you win! \nSaturday\, 7pm — BLACK LIVES\, MATTERS: The black experience is not monolithic; instead it is as varied as the color spectrum. In order to appreciate the sanctity of individuals\, we must first embrace the wondrous diversity and emotional commonality of the human race. A rodeo star\, a music icon\, an aspiring astronomer\, a grieving mom\, a grave-digger\, a hopeful boat owner and a renowned falconer represent just a small sliver of the possibilities. \nSunday\, 2pm — STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND: Home is where the heart is\, but what about when we have to relocate? Then what? These refugees seek shelter and a new start in unusual environments and with uncommon dignity. \nSunday\, 4pm — HIGHLY ATTUNED: Summer’s here and the time is right to thank those who make the music that has us dancing in the streets\, grooving in the sheets and marching to very different beats. Bowie\, Cobain and the Allmans appear on this short soundtrack as do a few folks — real\, surreal and animated — who you’ve never heard before\, but will be humming for years to come.

SUMMARY:Tom Skerritt and the Red Badge Project
DESCRIPTION:One way to “Support Our Troops” is to Support their Stories. Please join legendary actor Tom Skerritt (TOP GUN\, ALIEN\, STEEL MAGNOLIAS) on Friday\, June 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the Gesa Power House Theatre to do just that. \nTom Skerritt and retired Army Captain Evan Bailey are co-founders The Red Badge Project\, a non-profit organization teaching veterans coping with PTSD and TBIs the skills needed for five-star storytelling. \nOn this evening\, Skerritt and two founding faculty members\, Shawn Wong and Warren Etheredge\, will share some of their trade secrets with you and introduce you to a handful of veterans who will share their stories on stage. Etheredge — who will serve as the event’s emcee — is also the co-founder and curator of the Walla Walla Movie Crush that will take place on July 1 and 2\, also at the Power House. \nFor more than five years\, The Red Badge Project has been helping veterans express themselves in order to conquer their demons. (The Walla Walla Public Library has been host to the group since 2014.) You can help the cause by buying tickets – all proceeds benefit The Red Badge Project – to ensure that the stories told by the men and women of national service are held\, healing\, and heard. \nReserved seating tickets ($25) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nThe Red Badge Project helps veterans tell their unique truths through storytelling. The Walla Walla Public Library is the only library in the nation chosen to participate in the Red Badge Project. For more information\, go to theredbadgeproject.org or call Library Director Beth Hudson at 509-524-4433. \nThis event is supported by the City of Walla Walla\, Friends of the Walla Walla Public Library\, and the Exchange Club of Walla Walla.

SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Dream" - Royal Ballet (mixed program)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Ballet production of “The Dream / Symphonic Variations /Marguerite and Armand” on Wednesday\, June 28 at 6:00 p.m. This event is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThis gorgeous mixed program demonstrates the great creative vision of Frederick Ashton\, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet\, by celebrating three of his most-loved works. Ashton helped define the English style of ballet – characterized most notably by precise\, fleet footwork\, sensuous épaulement (the way the shoulders are held) and gorgeous line of delicate simplicity. \n“The Dream” is Ashton’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s riotous comedy in which a forest sprite plays havoc\, armed with a love potion. The plot is condensed into 50 minutes of feuding fairies\, sprightly spirits\, confused lovers and\, of course\, a man with the head of an donkey. \n“Symphonic Variations” was Ashton’s first work after World War II\, and one of the Company’s first to be performed on the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House\, in 1946. With six dancers performing a series of quartets\, duets\, sextets and solos to Franck’s brooding “Variations Symphoniques”\, this seminal masterpiece celebrates the pure beauty of movement. \n“Marguerite and Armand” is Ashton’s beautiful and emotional retelling of a well-known story\, familiar to us through Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton famously created this poignant ballet on Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963. \nBeer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. The screening runs for approximately 3 hours 10 minutes including a 15 minute on-screen introduction and two intermissions. \nGeneral admission tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. RSVP on Facebook \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Live Cinema: George Balanchine - "Jewels" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Ballet production of “Jewels” on Wednesday\, May 24 at 6:00 p.m. \n \nGeorge Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds\, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’\, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendor of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’. \n“Jewels” is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine\, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company. \nThis screening runs about 2 hours 30 minutes including two intermissions plus a 15-minute introduction. Beer\, wine\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nGeneral admission tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:The Baudboys
DESCRIPTION:The Baudboys will return for another a cappella concert in Walla Walla on Friday\, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. They last performed here in 2015. The Mid-Columbia Mastersingers Women’s Choir will open the concert which is sponsored in part by Price Computers and Grassi Refrigeration. \nThe Baudboys are an 8-part a cappella group of Microsoft employees (aka “geeks”). With a rotating membership of 7-9 members\, The Baudboys competed or performed at the Pacific Northwest Regional Harmony Sweepstakes for a record nine years running\, claiming the top spot in 2008 and again in 2011. They placed 2nd overall (and received Audience Favorite) at the 2017 Sweepstakes. \n \nBack around 1990\, a couple of the founding members of the coed Microtones decided that they wanted to form a new men’s a cappella group at Microsoft. True to their profession\, the group’s chosen name\, The Baudboys\, referred to the method by which modem speeds were rated. The group performed only a few times in its first years of existence\, doing lunch time gigs on the Microsoft campus. \nAs members left Microsoft over the years\, they would also leave the Baudboys\, prompting natural turnover in the membership. During the 1990’s\, the group expanded it’s membership\, aiming to have two full quartets within the group. Since that time\, the group has remained at 7-9 members\, but the expanded membership has allowed the group to sing more complex arrangements than the 4-part charts that the founders envisioned. \nThe Baudboys performed locally at Mariners\, Storm\, and Thunderbirds games\, at Northwest Folklife\, at local schools\, churches\, prisons\, Baudboy weddings\, and senior centers\, and anywhere else they could find a willing audience. More recently\, The Baudboys have co-headlined with The Coats\, and opened for Take 6 and Manhattan Transfer. \nReserved seating tickets ($32-$27 Adults\,  $20 for Students\, ticket fees included) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:WWU Steel Band Concert with Ray Holman
DESCRIPTION:The WWU Steel Band reprises their annual concert at Gesa Power House Theatre on Sunday\, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. Joining the band in concert is steel pan arranger and composer Ray Holman. \n \nRay Holman began playing steel drums professionally at 13 with Ellie Mannette’s Invaders. As a teenager\, he became known as a virtuoso solo player\, becoming the youngest person ever to win the solo division of the “ping pong” (an early name for the tenor pan) competition in 1964. He traveled from group to group for a time\, joining Starlift\, Destination Tokyo\, Pandemonium\, Exodus\, the Hummingbirds\, and Phase II Pan Groove. During this time\, he gained a reputation as one of the five major steel band arrangers\, as he repeatedly led groups to victory in the Trinidadian national Panorama competitions\, with arrangements for bands numbering up to 120 performers. He also gained a reputation for challenging the system to some degree by departing from the traditional Calypso tunes for the competitions\, and in 1972 he became the first arranger to compose and play his own music for the Panorama competition. He also occasionally made arrangements from European classical music\, much to the surprise of steel band traditionalists. As a result\, he has become one of the most respected and sought after musicians in the steel band form\, both as a solo player and as an arranger. In 1993\, he was awarded the Hummingbird Silver Medal of Merit by the government of Trinidad and Tobago for his contributions to the culture of the nation. \n \nThe WWU Steel Band formed in 2002 and is directed by Brandon Beck. The group tours throughout the US and has also toured to the island of Bermuda. In previous years\, they have performed with world-class steel pan artists such as Victor Provost\, Gary Gibson\, and Tom Miller. \nReserved seating tickets ($20-$15) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Proceeds from the concert go to support the WWU Steel Band through recruiting\, touring\, and purchasing instruments. \nRSVP on Facebook

SUMMARY:Rhythm Future Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents acoustic jazz ensemble Rhythm Future Quartet on Thursday\, May 4\, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. \nRhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome\, named for a Django Reinhardt tune\, offers up a newly minted sound\, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France\, yet wholly contemporary. The group performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. \n \n \n \nJason Anick\, an award-winning composer and one of the youngest professors at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston\, has shared the stage with an array of artists including Grammy award winning guitarist John Jorgenson\, Stevie Wonder\, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band\, and Tommy Emmanuel. \nOlli Soikkeli (coined “the Finnish boy wonder”) recently made the move from Scandinavia to New York City\, where he quickly became a top call guitarist in the bustling Brooklyn jazz scene. He has performed alongside rising star Cyrille Aimee\, world-renowned Gypsy guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg\, Bucky Pizzarelli and many others. \nMax O’Rourke was the winner of the 2015 Saga Award from DjangoFest Northwest\, and at 19 has already toured/recorded with many of the top American Gypsy Jazz musicians including John Jorgenson and Gonzalo Bergara. \nGreg Loughman is a top call bassist in Boston and has been heard with such luminaries as Sheila Jordan\, Curtis Fuller and George Garzone. \nReserved seating tickets ($32-$27 Adults\, $20 Students\, including ticket fees) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Madama Butterfly" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Opera production of “Madama Butterfly” on Wednesday\, April 26 at 6:00 p.m. \n \nPuccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas\, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden\, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s stunningly beautiful production. \nThe exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticized views of Japan. Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning\, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young\, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel dì’ (One fine day) as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams. \nRoyal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano\, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera\, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice. \nThis screening runs about 2 hours 45 minutes including one intermission\, plus a 15-minute introduction. Beer\, wine\, and popcorn will be available for purchase. \nGeneral admission tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:John Muir: Watch\, Pray\, and Fight
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents “John Muir: Watch\, Pray\, and Fight” a play created and performed by Mark Raddatz on Saturday\, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. \nIn order to capture the essence of the legendary mountaineer\, naturalist\, and founder of the Sierra Club\, Mark Raddatz composed the script entirely from Muir’s own words. This is not a biographical essay or paraphrase of an animal story. This is Muir as he would have appeared and spoken to an audience in his own time. \n“I went to the University of the Pacific’s library for the bulk of my research\,” Raddatz says. “They have all the Muir’s journals and other papers. Despite his having spoken before innumerable gatherings in the last 30 years of his life\, I was assured that there were no actual printed speeches.” \nAfter strenuous research in the newspapers of the period and Muir’s own papers\, Raddatz found three. Traveling to Stockton\, California\, where the University of the Pacific’s Holt-Atherton Collections are housed\, involved crossing and re-crossing the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges that Muir did so much to preserve. Raddatz took advantage of this to explore and camp where Muir did a century before. \n“During my lifetime\,” says Raddatz\, “I’ve noticed popular culture has tended to tame John Muir\, to rub the rough spots smooth and portray him as a warm and fuzzy eccentric; someone to take to our hearts\, but not take too seriously. This was no Disney character chatting with the birds and squirrels; what Muir had to say back then is startlingly meaningful even now.” \nWithout explanation or exposition\, Raddatz launches into the sort of talk Muir might have made during the fight for Yosemite and the national park idea. For just over an hour\, the audience is treated to the poetry\, wit\, insight and passion that made John Muir the most effective voice for preservation in his own time and a remarkably pertinent voice in ours. His portrayal is thoughtful\, thorough and humorous – and makes a very entertaining evening. \nMark Raddatz is a professional actor who has appeared in television\, movies\, numerous Shakespeare festivals\, and many local Walla Walla theater productions. His roles have included the Reverend Shaw Moore in “Footloose”\, Malvolio in “Twelfth Night”\, Matthew Harrison Brady in “Inherit the Wind”\, Jack Manning in “Angel Street”\, Horace Vandergelder in “The Matchmaker”\, the Duke in “The Merchant of Venice”\, Claudius in “Hamlet”\, Baptista in “Taming of the Shrew”\, Henry Higgins in both “Pygmalion” and “My Fair Lady”\, King Arthur in “Camelot”\, Arnolphe in Moliere’s “School for Wives”\, Jud Fry in “Oklahoma”\, Theseus in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”\, and many others. He was producing artistic director of Actor’s Repertory Theatre of Sedona where he directed numerous shows. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Tempest" - Royal Shakespeare Company
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre will screen the current Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production of “The Tempest” on Wednesday\, March 22 at 6:00 p.m. \n“The Tempest” is brought to life on the RSC stage in collaboration with Intel and in association with The Imaginarium Studios\, featuring some of today’s most advanced technology in a bold re-imagining of Shakespeare’s magical play\, and starring Simon Russell Beale. The production was filmed live in Stratford-Upon-Avon and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nOn a distant island a man waits. \nRobbed of his position\, power and wealth\, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man\, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician\, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon\, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. \nSimon Russell Beale returns to the RSC after 20 years to play Prospero in a production directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran. \n \nThis film runs about 2 hours 45 minutes\, including one intermission. SUMMARY:Shelby Earl Album Release with Planes on Paper
DESCRIPTION:A&N Productions presents: Shelby Earl Album Release with Planes on Paper on Saturday\, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Gesa Power House Theatre. This event (21+ only) is sponsored by Walla Walla Cannabis Company. \n\n \nShelby Earl’s first two albums earned the kind of raves any musician would kill for. Upon hearing her 2011 debut\, Burn the Boats\, NPR’s Ann Powers called Earl her “new favorite songwriter\,” and she wasn’t alone. Accolades followed from Rolling Stone to the Wall Street Journal and a million music sites in between that positioned her somewhere to the left of Neko Case\, a few blocks from Sharon Van Etten\, catercorner to Angel Olsen. She toured everywhere\, playing with the likes of Loudon Wainwright\, Rhett Miller\, and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie\, who spoke for many people when he said Earl had “the most heartbreakingly beautiful voice in Seattle.”  \nTwo years later\, she followed up with the equally powerful Swift Arrows\, and returned to the touring trenches\, startling audiences around the world with songs that laid bare an inner landscape full of darkness and loss\, as well as the defiant resolution not to be consumed by them. Both records are gorgeous\, painstakingly crafted\, and\, not to put too fine a point on anything\, full of heavy emotional weather. (Not for nothing did Powers observe that Earl’s writes “for those of us who have been through a few things.”) \nBut take a minute to consider what it means to have been through a few things. It suggests reaching the other side. Eight years after burning her (figurative) boats to pursue life as a professional musician\, quitting her job\, and forging a career\, Shelby Earl found that her inspiration was leading away from the darkness and anger she so fruitfully explored on those first two LPs and toward the light that would yield her third\, and most accomplished record to date. \nThat light shines through every facet of the album\, from the songwriting\, whose thematic concerns turn away from savage self-exploration and toward coruscating character studies\, ballads\, and swooning pop gems. The new songs retain her gift for a dark lyrical turn\, but locate the telltale images in the context of other people. \nOnce producer Martin Feveyear (Mark Lanegan\, Brandi Carlisle\, Eric Bachmann) came on board\, and the whole team entered the studio\, the process took flight.  It wasn’t a question of “going pop\,” incorporating more danceable beats\, or mobilizing the vogue for vintage keyboard soul—though both of those aesthetics lurk at the edge of the frame throughout. No\, it was something much simpler: The Man Who Made Himself a Name is the sound of an artist who\, having lived and chronicled some catastrophically hard times\, found herself on the other side feeling happier\, healthier\, healed—and making music that sounded like it. \n\n \nThere is a vocal synergy that exists between Navid Eliot and Jen Borst\, the two core members of the Washington-based folk group Planes on Paper. They each have clear\, unique voices\, but when combined\, a special kind of musical beauty emerges. \n“In a modern age where indie folk groups with male/female harmonies are as common as a Starbucks on every corner\, Planes on Paper offer an organic alternative\, refreshing in its artistry.” – The Revue \n\nReserved Seating Tickets: $15\nVIP Tables (includes on stage seating and wine for 4 people): $80 \nThis event is restricted to 21 and older (ID required). \n\nThis concert receives sponsor support from Walla Walla Cannabis Company\, however the smoking or consumption of cannabis is prohibited at Gesa Power House Theatre per the guidelines of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (full text of Initiative 502 available here). \n \nMarijuana has intoxicating effects and may be habit forming. Marijuana can impair concentration\, coordination\, and judgment.
