SUMMARY:"Protejiendo Nuestras Raíces (Protecting Our Roots)" - a free film screening
DESCRIPTION:(translate this page into Spanish) \nThe Listeners Project: Queremos Escucharte will present a free screening of the documentary film Protejiendo Nuestras Raíces: Un Proyecto de Salma Anguiano (Protecting Our Roots: A Salma Anguiano Project) on Saturday\, May 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Gesa Power House Theatre. \nGrowing up in a migrant working community Salma Anguiana often saw many injustices and unsafe working conditions faced by people in her community. During her first year of college\, Anguiana embarked on a journey to advocate for the community she grew up in. She formed Protejiendo Nuestras Raices\, and began advocacy efforts to address the unsafe working conditions that people like her parents faced in the workplace. Through this effort she also hoped to create spaces for people in our communities to speak their truths. For so long\, she saw people around her stay quiet due to fear. She wanted to end the cycle and bring light to the atrocities that occur in the workplace\, in our own backyards. \nAnguiano began collecting stories of farmworkers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was oftentimes difficult to bring these stories—including many from undocumented workers—to a wider audience. Anguiano and her collaborators navigated these challenges by making the narrators in the film completely anonymous. \nArtist statement from Salma Anguiano: \nThe people who often live in the shadows\, people like my parents. People who have names\, stories\, feelings\, and emotions. People who are often silenced or discouraged from speaking\, were the people who I sought to elevate. Today I hope that their voices are projected in this space\, the way they have asked for it\, anonymously. The film is for my parents\, for the Latinx community\, and for the migrant and undocumented folk across the globe. I hope you all feel empowered. \nA facilitated interview with Anguiano will precede a screening of Protejiendo Nuestras Raices. The audience will be given space to reflect on their experience during pauses throughout the thirty-minute screening. A Q&A session will follow the screening. A resource fair with complimentary refreshments follows at 5:30 p.m. with resource tables hosted by the WWIRC (Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition) and the Blue Mountain Action Council. \nThis event is free and open to the public and is cosponsored by WWIRC\, Colectivo de Arte Social\, The Listeners Project: Queremos Escucharte\, Whitman College and Northwest Archives\, Associated Students of Whitman College\, Project Pericles\, Hernandez Immigration Law\, LLC\, Walla Walla Public Library\, and Gesa Power House Theatre. \nGesa Power House Theatre is currently operating at full capacity\, but will continue to follow the most recent guidance from state and county Departments of Health. Current health and safety guidelines at Gesa Power House Theatre are available online or by calling the box office.

SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "La Traviata" (opera)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Live Cinema screening of The Royal Opera’s current production of La Traviata\, on Wednesday\, May 11 at 6:00 p.m. \n \n★★★★★\n“Bob Crowley’s sets are a wonder to behold…”\n– Broadway World \n★★★★\n“Another great Verdi performance…”\n– Daily Express \n19th-century Paris is a place of contrasts: glamor and superficiality\, love and lust\, life and death. Richard Eyre’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata for The Royal Opera recently celebrated 25 years on the Royal Opera House stage and this year returns with acclaimed opera star Pretty Yende as Violetta. \nThe courtesan Violetta (Yende) lives and breathes the glamour of Parisian high society\, but she has never known love – until she meets Alfredo (Stephen Costello). Abandoning her hedonistic existence for a new life in the country\, Violetta receives a surprise visit from Alfredo’s father Giorgio (Dimitri Platanias)\, who exposes the cruelty of society’s double standards – and accelerates her tragic demise. \nVerdi’s riches-to-rags opera has it all: from the intoxicating joy of the “Brindisi” party chorus\, to the hushed poignancy of the final act\, where hope teeters on the edge of despair.  Courtesan Violetta sings some of Verdi’s most acclaimed arias including the joyous “Sempre libera\,” in her poignant and passionate encounters with Alfredo and his father. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. The Live Cinema Series is sponsored in part by Shakespeare Walla Walla. \nThis screening has an approximate runtime of 3 hours 30 minutes\, including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. If you want to purchase 4 or more titles in the Live Cinema series together and save 10%\, please call the box office at 509-529-6500 (offer not available online). \nGesa Power House Theatre is currently operating at full capacity\, but will continue to follow the most recent guidance from state and county Departments of Health. Current health and safety guidelines at Gesa Power House Theatre are available online or by calling the box office. \n\nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? Join the +Power Club (highest priority) or sign up for our e-mail list! \n\nThe Live Cinema Series is supported by Shakespeare Walla Walla\, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that aims to make Shakespeare and theater approachable and entertaining to students in eastern Washington and Oregon.  \n \n\nSeason Sponsors: \n     \nWalla Walla Union-Bulletin\, Northwest Public Broadcasting\, Pacific Power \nAdditional support provided by:\nWalla Walla County\, Port of Walla Walla\, City of Walla Walla \nEach Coldwell Banker Office is Independently Owned and Operated

SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "All Ages Show" (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of the documentary All Ages Show on Wednesday\, July 6\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nAll Ages Show is a new documentary film about the history of the music scene in Tri-Cities\, Washington\, that began in the mid-1980s and continues today. While Seattle’s music scene\, was changing the world in the early 90s with “grunge\,” Tri-Cities had its own thriving music scene inspired by Washington DC Hardcore\, a scene that many didn’t think could exist in a smaller community. The film also asks the question: with music now so accessible\, band exposure so saturated\, and record companies on the decline\, could there ever be a thriving music scene again? \nAll Ages Show is directed by Tri-Cities native Tony Moser\, who worked in Los Angeles editing behind-the-scenes featurettes for feature films (The Amazing Spider-Man\, Men in Black 3)\, before moving back to his hometown to work as a video producer for a local media company. Moser will attend the Walla Walla screening. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. This event will have a total runtime of about two hours. \nClick here to read an interview with Warren Etheredge\, Director of Film Programming at Gesa Power House Theatre. \n\nGesa Power House Theatre is currently operating at full capacity\, but will continue to follow the most recent guidance from state and county Departments of Health.
