SUMMARY:American Patchwork Quartet
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, January 22nd\, at 7PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre is proud to present American Patchwork Quartet! This event is sponsored by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAmerican Patchwork Quartet (APQ)\, led by multi-GRAMMY® award-winning guitarist/vocalist Clay Ross\, binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication\, country twang\, West African hypnotics\, and East Asian ornamentation. APQ’s sound is a masterful confluence of tradition and innovation\, transcending culture\, politics\, and ideology. Their debut was recently nominated for “Best Folk Album” at the 67th GRAMMY® Awards. \nEach carefully chosen piece dives deep into America’s patchwork soul and shares the joys\, sorrows\, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories. Far from being a haphazard collection of musical scraps\, APQ is a deliberately designed homage to America’s past and a showcase of its dynamic present. It beckons listeners to meditate upon our shared identity and relish in the musical threads that bind us. Just as an intricately designed quilt becomes a cherished family heirloom\, when the distinct patterns of APQ’s music align in perfect harmony\, the result is both a blanket of warmth and a timeless treasure. \nTickets go on sale to the general public on November 15th. SUMMARY:Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 26th\, at 7PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre welcomes Mike Wiley back to the stage\, for his presentation of Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till. This event is sponsored by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts; Tina & Steven Yentzer; and Jennifer & Ben Gauyan. \nIn 1955\, a 14-year-old black Chicago youth traveled to the Mississippi Delta with country kinfolk and southern cooking on his mind. He walked off the train and into a world he could never understand — a world of thick color lines\, of hard-held class systems and unspeakable taboos. Young Emmett crossed that line and stepped into his gruesome fate by whistling at a white woman. Through conversations with a Look magazine journalist\, Emmett’s mother\, and others caught up in the events that led to Till’s devastating fate\, this riveting play chronicles the murder\, trial\, and unbelievable confessions of the men accused of Till’s murder. Actor Mike Wiley skillfully plays every role in this powerful one-man show. \n“A depth of clarity as distinct as an entire cast of players could make them… so packed that we are rapt from the very first word.” – Classical Voice of NC \nTickets go on sale to the general public on November 15th. SUMMARY:Ímar
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 13th\, at 7PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre is thrilled to present Ímar! A BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner\, this Glasgow-based five-piece band stands out from the crowd — by taking things back to basics. This event is sponsored by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nWith a lineup featuring current and former members of Mànran\, Mec Lir\, RURA and Talisk — whose collectively crammed trophy-cabinet includes several BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and All-Britain/All-Ireland titles — Imar’s synergy centers on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland\, Ireland\, and the Isle of Man. All three places once shared the same Gaelic language\, and a similar kinship endures between their musical traditions. \n“As soon as we all sat down to play together properly\, it just worked\,” says bodhrán player Adam Brown (RURA)\, originally from Suffolk. “We were a bit stunned\, to be honest; all looking round at everyone else\, thinking\, ‘Is it just me\, or was that really good?’” \n“It’s definitely more of a pure-drop trad sound than most of the other bands we’re involved in\,” adds Cork-born uilleann piper\, flautist and whistle player Ryan Murphy (Mànran)\, “but I think that’s partly why it feels so natural. We’re going back to the music we started out playing – which is ultimately the reason why we’re all here as musicians.” \nTickets go on sale to the general public on November 15th.
