DESCRIPTION:The veterans who have served our nation bear the daily burden of their untold stories. The Red Badge Project was established by former Army Captain Evan Bailey and actor and Air Force Veteran Tom Skerritt to lift that weight. The Red Badge Project is dedicated to improving the lives of veterans by sharing storytelling skills to help them manage the challenges of PTS\, TBIs\, moral injury\, and more. Bi-monthly classes for veterans are offered in conjunction with the Vet Centers in Walla Walla\, Seattle\, Federal Way\, Everett\, and Spokane. At this event\, we are honored to be some of the first people outside of the Red Badge Project classroom to hear these stories. \nThis program is sponsored by Gesa Credit Union\, and supported in part\, by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission.  \n \nThis is a community-supported event\, made possible by the generosity of attendees like you. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, September 16\, at 7 PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly features Art\, Creativity & Immigrant Youth\, presented by speaker Lakeya Afolalu. This event is sponsored by Walla Walla and Humanities Washington. \nYoung people across the U.S.—and especially in Washington—are growing up between languages\, countries\, and cultures. In this talk\, explore how immigrant and transnational youth\, particularly girls of color\, use the arts to express their identities while navigating transnational lives and multilingualism. \nDrawing from personal experience\, community-based work in South Seattle\, and youth stories\, Afolalu highlights how creative expression becomes a vital space for self-expression\, community\, and voice. \nLakeya Afolalu lives in Seattle\, and is an assistant professor of language\, literacy\, and culture at the University of Washington. A Nigerian and African American scholar and leader\, her work explores immigrant and transnational youth identities through literacy\, language\, and the arts. She has a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. \nGesa Power House Theatre is committed to ensuring that the arts are for everyone. Her NPR Tiny Desk concert has more than 1.3 million views and her hour-long PBS special is available nationwide. \nGina’s music is deeply personal. Her passionate collection of bilingual songs takes audiences on a journey to discover her Latin roots through music as she shares her story of life in Texas as a married\, queer Catholic.  \nGina tours internationally as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department and runs Niñas Arriba\, a college fund she co-founded with her wife for young women in gang-dominated El Salvador.
