SUMMARY:"Being Michelle"
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents the award-winning feature-length documentary “Being Michelle” on Wednesday\, April 26 at 7 p.m. \n“Being Michelle” follows the astonishing journey of a deaf and disabled woman who survived incarceration and abuse under unimaginable circumstances by a system that refused to accommodate her needs as a deaf person with autism. Michelle’s trajectory changed when she met Kim Law\, a blind volunteer life coach who teaches classes to people in prison. Today\, outside of prison\, Kim and Michelle are doing the difficult work of unraveling Michelle’s history\, of telling the story of Michelle’s traumatic childhood and her adverse experiences in the criminal justice system. With the support of Kim\, Michelle realizes her own voice and strength. Throughout the film Michelle’s artwork provides her own depiction of the trauma she survived as well as a means to her recovery. Ultimately\, “Being Michelle” is a story of redemption. It is about the bonds between women committed to thriving in a broken system\, who are forging a path to healing that can only come through facing the truth and communicating it\, together. \n“Being Michelle” has received a landslide of accolades which are all listed on their website. More recently\, at the 2023 IDYLLWILD International Festival of Cinema\, an event the Hollywood Insider calls “the greatest little film festival on earth\, “Being Michelle” received recognition in three different categories: (Winner) Golden Era Humanitarian Film Award\, (Vanguard) Award for Cinematic Achievement Director Documentary Feature\, (Vanguard) Award for Cinematic Achievement Documentary Feature.   \nReserved seating tickets are $15 for adults ($10 for students) and are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. \nIf you want to purchase four or more titles in the Power House Movie series\, save 10% by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Power House Movies: Seattle Jewish Film Festival - Selected Shorts
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre’s Director of Film Programming Warren Etheredge curates a collection of the best short films from the 2023 Seattle Jewish Film Festival for this program on March 29 at 7 p.m. \nOne of two in-person encore screenings (the other is set for March 30 at Hillel at University of Washington)\, Walla Walla’s showing of the Seattle Jewish Film Festival 2023 lineup is an exploration of the many ways grief is observed\, celebrated\, and/or sanctified. \nIn the words of Curator Warren Etheredge: \n“Spiritually and culturally\, we have many ways to mourn and bless the dead. Some follow prescribed customs\, others form new traditions with the passing of loved ones. The Mourner’s Kaddish\, the Jewish prayer recited in honor of the deceased never mentions death or dying\, but instead proclaims the greatness of G-d. It encourages reciters to not wallow in grief or ignore the impact of loss altogether. In fact\, the word kaddish actually means sanctification in Aramaic\, similar to the Hebrew word kadosh\, or holy. This program of short films examines the metaphorical progression and three stages of Jewish mourning rituals—from Aninut to Shiva to Sheloshim—noting the passing of parents\, grandparents\, neighbors\, strangers\, and even a beached whale. Curated together\, these beautiful lamentations also attest to how international artists sanctify a period of global grief with cinematic blessings.” \n \nTo virtually catch the Seattle Jewish Film Festival in full\, visit the festival’s main website here. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. This event will have a total runtime of about 90 minutes. \nIf you want to purchase four or more titles in the Power House Movie series\, save 10% by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: An Evening of Ukrainian Shorts
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theater proudly presents “An Evening of Ukrainian Shorts\,” a benefit screening of short films on Wednesday\, March 1 at 7 p.m. This series is curated by Director of Film Programming Warren Etheredge and brought to you in part by Walla Walla Movie Crush. \nThe next installment of our Power House Movie series\, “An Evening of Ukrainian Shorts\,” brings to your local screen a selection of short films created\, directed\, and produced by Ukrainian filmmakers. In this line-up of deeply moving pieces is  “Diaper Cake” (directed by Anastasia Babenko)\, a short following two young people and their baby having to grow up fast during difficult times\, and “Liturgy of Anti-Tank Obstacles” (directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk)\, a film exploring the lives of sculptors in west Ukraine who previously made religious statues and now fin themselves retraining to build anti-tank obstacles to help fend off the Russian invasion. \nThese short films stand as a testament to the power and resilience of the Ukrainian people no matter the circumstances. As Director Anastasia Babenko puts it\, “Ukraine is not a ruin. It’s a place of love\, power\, and freedom. ‘Life will win over death\, and the light will win over darkness.'” \nAddressing her short film\, Director Anastasia Babenko said\, “‘Diaper Cake’ is a love letter to my sister Katia and to my nephew Zakhar\, and more broadly\, to all Ukrainian women and children. Since the war broke out in my home country\, my perception of the film has changed drastically. Our story is set in a maternity hospital\, and I can’t help thinking about the maternity hospital in Mariupol destroyed by a Russian airstrike on March 9\, 2022. As of April 2022\, at least 217 children were killed\, and 393 children were injured in this war. Those who died in that horrible attack resemble our characters a lot. They were young people at their most intimate\, pure and hopeful\, happy to bring another life into this world. My sister and my five-year-old nephew are now refugees. They had to leave their home like millions of Ukrainians. With the images of destroyed Ukrainian cities in the media\, I would like to show another side of Ukraine.” \nFor an inside look into “Liturgy of Anti-Tank Obstacles\,” watch Director Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s statement for Sundance Film Festival 2023. \n \nA portion of this event’s proceeds will be donated to Livyj Bereh\, a volunteer and artist-run charity dedicated to rebuilding houses in war-torn but liberated areas of Ukraine. To see this group in action and to show your support\, visit Livyj Bereh’s instagram profile. \nTickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "All Ages Show" (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of the documentary All Ages Show on Wednesday\, July 6\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nAll Ages Show is a new documentary film about the history of the music scene in Tri-Cities\, Washington\, that began in the mid-1980s and continues today. While Seattle’s music scene\, was changing the world in the early 90s with “grunge\,” Tri-Cities had its own thriving music scene inspired by Washington DC Hardcore\, a scene that many didn’t think could exist in a smaller community. The film also asks the question: with music now so accessible\, band exposure so saturated\, and record companies on the decline\, could there ever be a thriving music scene again? \nAll Ages Show is directed by Tri-Cities native Tony Moser\, who worked in Los Angeles editing behind-the-scenes featurettes for feature films (The Amazing Spider-Man\, Men in Black 3)\, before moving back to his hometown to work as a video producer for a local media company. Moser will attend the Walla Walla screening. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. This event will have a total runtime of about two hours. \nClick here to read an interview with Warren Etheredge\, Director of Film Programming at Gesa Power House Theatre. \n\nGesa Power House Theatre is currently operating at full capacity\, but will continue to follow the most recent guidance from state and county Departments of Health. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "All Sorts" (plus live Q&A with the director)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of the film All Sorts on Wednesday\, March 30\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Director J. Rick Castañeda will be in attendance for a live Q&A following the screening. \n“We’re really excited to bring this film to Walla Walla” said Castañeda\, who grew up in Granger\, Washington. “Growing up in Eastern Washington\, I didn’t have a lot of opportunity to attend red carpet premieres with actors and filmmakers until I moved to Los Angeles\, and it really is the most amazing thing. The lights\, the pictures\, hearing the filmmakers talk about what it was like to make the film … it’s all part of the Hollywood experience\, and I’m excited to bring that back to where I grew up.” \n \nAll Sorts\, a movie about a lonely data entry clerk who stumbles into the world of championship folder filing\, is a quirky comedy about finding magic in everyday life. The main character\, Diego\, played by Eli Vargas (Arrested Development)\, is desperate to find a job\, excitement\, and even love. New on the job at a strange company\, Diego stumbles into an incredibly fast filer named June\, played by Greena Park (The Comedown)\, and the two journey through a wildly unexpected office adventure. \n“When I moved to Los Angeles to break into the film industry\, I worked a lot of mundane office jobs\,” says director J. Rick Castañeda (Cement Suitcase). “I found lots of time to imagine magical escape routes out of the grey cubicles where I was trapped everyday. I really wanted to add a little magic to this otherwise dreary landscape.” \nFilmed almost entirely in Toppenish\, WA and Yakima\, WA\, this surreal workplace comedy premiered digitally at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) in 2021\, and was one of the festival’s most-viewed films. Chase Hutchinson of The Stranger called it “a sentimental and surrealistic comedy unlike anything else I’ve seen at the festival.” \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "Takeover" (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of Takeover on Wednesday\, March 2\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nIn 1970\, a group of young Puerto Rican activists took over a decrepit hospital in New York City\, launching a battle for their lives\, their community\, and healthcare for all. \nTakeover explores the twelve historic hours on July 14\, 1970\, in which fifty members of the Young Lords Party stormed the dilapidated Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx\, drove out their administrative staff\, barricaded entrances and windows\, and made their cries for decent healthcare known to the world. They raised the Puerto Rican flag atop the building\, as well as a banner reading “The People’s Hospital” – a nom de guerre still used today. Through archival footage\, seamless reenactments\, and modern-day interviews\, we follow the Young Lords’ resistance against institutions curated by wealth and white supremacy\, and their fight for the most basic of human rights: the right to accessible\, quality healthcare. \nTakeover endeavors to capture the imagination of a new generation of activists and suggest actions that ordinary citizens can take to change the conversation — and the country. It is more vital than ever before that the bravery and behavior of the Young Lords be shown\, celebrated\, and built upon today. \nTakeover is currently nominated for “Outstanding Achievement in Shorts List Films at the 2022 Cinema Eye Honors Awards. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "Since I Been Down" (documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a free Power House Movie screening of the 2020 documentary film Since I Been Down on Wednesday\, February 2\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. \n \nMeet Kimonti Carter. Former president and current member of an over 40-year Washington State prisoner-initiated program\, the Black Prisoners’ Caucus. At 34\, Kimonti founded TEACH (Taking Education and Creating History)\, a remarkably innovative prisoner education program. \nKimonti and a group of his peers maneuver through a non-negotiable pathway to joining gangs as early as 11-years-old. This is a community profoundly impacted by the city’s disinvestment in housing\, education\, and employment as well as our policies in the 1990’s. In 1993\, the voters of Washington State allowed a “three strikes” law to pass that sent criminals to prison for life. What has this legacy of captivity done to them\, and to their communities? \nSince I Been Down is told by the people who have lived these conditions\, and intimate stories from interviews are brought to life through archival footage\, cinema verité discussions\, masquerade\, and dance. SUMMARY:Power House Movie: "Aviva" (cutting edge cinema)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Power House Movie screening of the 2020 independent film Aviva on Wednesday\, January 19\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. \n \n“A freewheeling blend of dance and surrealist interrogations of gender identity…entrancing.“\n– IndieWire \n“Its leaps and transitions are often mind-bending…illuminating and expansive.”\n– The Hollywood Reporter \nAfter meeting online\, transatlantic lovers Aviva and Eden embark on a tumultuous courtship\, love affair and marriage. The couple struggles\, separates\, and tries to get back together\, as dual aspects of each one’s personality battles forces inside and out. \nDirector Boaz Yakin ‘s (Remember the Titans) dreamy dance film\, with choreography from former member of Israeli dance company Batsheva Dance Company and co-star Bobbi Jene Smith\, tells a story that is timeless\, universal and yet up-to-the-moment. The character of Aviva\, played by both Zina Zinchenko (and at times by Or Schraiber)\, is a young Parisian who develops an online romance with Eden\, played by Tyler Phillips (and at times Bobbie Jene Smith)\, a New Yorker. After a long courtship they meet in person and fall in love\, settling into an intimate relationship that leads to marriage\, but one\, as many are\, laced with conflicts. Incorporating exuberant dance sequences\, and featuring a pair of principal characters played by four different actors daringly expressing both masculine and feminine sides\, Aviva captures a restless and changing today where who we are as women and men\, and how we navigate the world\, is up for grabs. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 adults\, $10 students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Triggered (documentary film)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a work-in progress screening of the upcoming documentary film Triggered on Friday\, April 23 at 7:00PM with an encore screening on Wednesday\, April 28 at 7:00PM. \n \nA Pacific Northwest artist with a stellar pedigree\, Charles Krafft was riding high as the bad boy of ceramic sculpture until\, in 2013\, a Seattle newspaper published a piece by local art critic Jen Graves\, labeling Krafft as a holocaust denier and white nationalist. The response was instantaneous and foreshadowed the rise of cancel culture: within months\, galleries and museums the world-over removed Krafft’s work from exhibition and cancelled his participation in shows\, symposia\, and events. \nWhere there had previously been a casual acceptance of his irreverent work\, which included exquisite pieces of Delftware china featuring Nazi iconography\, suddenly Krafft found himself shunned by friends and colleagues who had previously laughed at his pleas for “forgiveness” for the Third Reich\, and who had previously defended his right to make racist and homophobic comments. \nFollowing nearly two decades of filming\, director Nadeem Uddin reveals that the truth is far more complex. Triggered is the story of how the Seattle art world ignored\, enabled\, and were even amused by his descent into a rabbit hole of conspiracy and white nationalism. The film also explores how Krafft’s growing obsession with Holocaust revisionism closely tracks with the growth of a massive glioblastoma tumor in his brain. \nBefore Krafft died in 2020\, he gave filmmakers access to his own archives and granted permission for an in-depth portrayal of his life and work. \n“While his obsession with Nazis is unpleasant\,” says director Nadeem Uddin\, “And his holocaust revisionism disgusting\, Charles Krafft was also a unique and important figure in the cultural life of the Northwest.” \nGeneral admission seating ($15 Adults\, $10 Students) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. Seating for each screening is capped at 100 patrons\, as allowed under Phase 2 of Washington’s Safe Start Plan.
