The Live Cinema Series is supported by Shakespeare Walla Walla. \nThis screening has an approximate runtime of 3 hours. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "La Traviata" (opera)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre presents a Live Cinema screening of The Royal Opera’s current production of La Traviata\, on Wednesday\, May 11 at 6:00 p.m. \n \n★★★★★\n“Bob Crowley’s sets are a wonder to behold…”\n– Broadway World \n★★★★\n“Another great Verdi performance…”\n– Daily Express \n19th-century Paris is a place of contrasts: glamor and superficiality\, love and lust\, life and death. Richard Eyre’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata for The Royal Opera recently celebrated 25 years on the Royal Opera House stage and this year returns with acclaimed opera star Pretty Yende as Violetta. \nThe courtesan Violetta (Yende) lives and breathes the glamour of Parisian high society\, but she has never known love – until she meets Alfredo (Stephen Costello). Abandoning her hedonistic existence for a new life in the country\, Violetta receives a surprise visit from Alfredo’s father Giorgio (Dimitri Platanias)\, who exposes the cruelty of society’s double standards – and accelerates her tragic demise. \nVerdi’s riches-to-rags opera has it all: from the intoxicating joy of the “Brindisi” party chorus\, to the hushed poignancy of the final act\, where hope teeters on the edge of despair.  Courtesan Violetta sings some of Verdi’s most acclaimed arias including the joyous “Sempre libera\,” in her poignant and passionate encounters with Alfredo and his father. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. The Live Cinema Series is sponsored in part by Shakespeare Walla Walla. \nThis screening has an approximate runtime of 3 hours 30 minutes\, including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. SUMMARY:Edward Scissorhands (dance)
DESCRIPTION:Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents Edward Scissorhands on Wednesday\, September 25\, at 7:00 PM\, and Sunday\, September 29\, at 2:00 PM. \nMatthew Bourne’s magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands has carved a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide since its premiere in 2005. Filmed live for the first time in March 2024 at the Wales Millenium Centre\, Cardiff\, this “visually arresting and ceaselessly inventive” (Metro) production is “the perfect treat for all the family” (The Times). \nIn a castle high on a hill lives Edward: a boy created by an eccentric inventor. Can Edward find his place in the well-meaning community which struggles to see past his curious appearance to the innocence and gentleness within? \n“The story of Edward Scissorhands has never felt timelier. In an era when uniqueness and identity are both celebrated and reviled\, the story of how we treat anyone who appears to be different in our communities is as poignant and relevant now\, as when my dear friend Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay for Tim Burton’s legendary movie fable some 33 years ago… If you come to see it in cinemas\, I hope that you too will fall in love with the enchanting story of Edward Scissorhands\, the incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world.” Sir Matthew Bourne\, Artistic Director\, New Adventures. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series offers audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nReserved seating tickets are $15 ($10 for students) and are available online or by calling 509-529-6500. SUMMARY:Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 12th\, at 2PM\, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly presents a screening of Frankenstein\, filmed live at the Royal National Theatre. \nChildlike in his innocence but grotesque in form\, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes\, the increasingly desperate and vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Scientific responsibility\, parental neglect\, cognitive development\, and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic tale. \nThis production stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock\, Dr. Strange\, The Imitation Game) as the Creature\, filmed live at the Royal National Theatre in London in 2011. Writer Nick Dear aims to tell the story\, at least initially\, from the creature’s point of view. “We do start with the moment of creation\,” he says\, “but not told from the perspective of the scientists\, which is how it’s usually told; we tell it from the perspective of the experiment rather than the experimenter. \n“A great deal of what we’re trying to do in this show is to explore what it feels like to be that experiment.” \nReserved seating tickets begin at $15 ($10 for students) and will become available online to +Power Club members on February 8 at 8AM\, and to the general public on February 15 at 8AM. To join our +Power Club\, or learn more\, click here.
