Michael Fabiano stars as Faust\, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès. Virtuoso leading roles\, a large chorus\, music by Gounod\, sensational sets\, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar\, set in 1870s Paris. Above all\, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognizable numbers\, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 35 minutes including an onscreen introduction and one intermission. SUMMARY:Live Cinema Series: "La Traviata" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Opera House production of La Traviata on Sunday\, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nRichard Eyre’s beautiful production provides the perfect setting for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love. From the thrill of unexpected romance to a heartbreaking reconciliation that comes too late. Alfredo falls in love in with the courtesan Violetta in glamorous Paris society\, but underneath the surface run darker undercurrents\, leading to a tragic ending. The opera’s wealth of melodies includes the famous Brindisi and the exuberant “Sempre libera” – both showing the lyricism of Italian opera at its most immediately appealing. \nRichard Eyre’s production for The Royal Opera brings out all the emotional color\, from the giddy discovery of love\, through painful confrontation to the inevitable conclusion. Lavish period sets and costumes enhance the reality of a moving story based on true life. \nThe cast of this production includes Ermonela Jaho as Violetta\, Charles Castronovo as Alfredo Germont\, and Plácido Domingo as Giorgio Germont. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 35 minutes including an onscreen introduction and two intermissions. La Traviata is performed in Italian with English surtitles. \nBeer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "La Bayadere" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Live Cinema Series begins at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Ballet production of La Bayadère on Wednesday\, January 16 at 6:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThis ballet will transport audiences to a world of temple dancers\, vengeful gods\, jealous princesses and noble warriors. \nLa Bayadère tells a story of love\, passion and vengeance. Nikiya\, a temple dancer\, is in love with the warrior Solor but the High Brahmin desires her for himself. When Nikiya spurns him\, the furious High Brahmin tells Princess Gamzatti\, Solor’s fiancée\, that Solor and Nikiya are in love. In revenge\, Gamzatti orders Nikiya to be killed. Solor is haunted by Nikiya’s spirit and dreams of being reunited with her. At his wedding to Gamzatti he finally achieves his desire: the angry gods take vengeance for the death of Nikiya by destroying the temple\, killing the whole wedding party. Solor and Nikiya’s spirits are reunited. \nChoreographer Natalia Makarova brings the 19th-century Russian classic La Bayadère to life in her adaptation of Marius Petipa’s original choreography. La Bayadère was practically unknown to audiences outside Russia until Makarova bought her production to The Royal Ballet in 1989. It has since become a core work in the Company’s repertory. Particular highlights include the Kingdom of Shades scene in Act III\, a showcase for the corps de ballet as they perform arabesques across the moonlit stage. The cast will feature Royal Ballet Principals Marianela Nuñez as Nikiya\, Vadim Muntagirov as Solor and Natalia Osipova as Gamzatti. \nFilmed during a live event\, the Live Cinema Series broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with incredibly detailed close-ups of the performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 15 minutes including an onscreen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "The Nutcracker" (ballet)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues at Gesa Power House Theatre with a screening of the current Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker on Sunday\, December 16 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nThe young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favorite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King\, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets\, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home\, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognize Drosselmeyer’s nephew? \nPeter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting\, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic\, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment\, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous\, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. \nThis production of The Nutcracker has enthralled audiences for over 30 years since its opening in 1984. It showcases the full energy of the Company\, alongside the emerging talent of young dancers from The Royal Ballet School. The stunning costumes\, numbering around 600 and dating back to the world-premiere\, are revitalized for the show. \nLoosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann\, the ballet opens with a lively Christmas party\, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material\, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince\, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love. \nThe Royal Opera House cinema broadcasts offer audiences an equivalent to the best seat in the house\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage\, interviews and incredibly detailed close-ups of performers. \nThis screening runs approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including an onscreen introduction and one intermission. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Swan Lake" - Royal Ballet (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a rescheduled screening of the current Royal Ballet production of Swan Lake on Wednesday\, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds ($1/ticket) will be donated to the Walla Walla Symphony. \n \nSwan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This Season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text\, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet\, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane. \nThe cast for this production includes: \nODETTE – Marianela Nuñez\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED – Vadim Muntagirov\nVON ROTHBART – Bennet Gartside\nTHE QUEEN – Elizabeth McGorian\nBENNO – Alexander Campbell\nPRINCE SIEGFRIED’S YOUNGER SISTERS – Akane Takada\, Francesca Hayward \nPrince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman\, Odette\, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive\, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. \nSwan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet score. Given its status today as arguably one of the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets\, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime\, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky’s score\, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa’s royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov. \nThe Live Cinema Series features productions by The Royal Ballet\, The Royal Opera\, and The Royal Shakespeare Company\, filmed live in England\, and rebroadcast to select theaters. \nRuntime: approximately 3 hours 25 minutes including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Manon" - Royal Ballet
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current production of Manon by The Royal Ballet on Wednesday\, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. This performance is filmed live in London and rebroadcast to select theaters. \n \nManon’s brother Lescaut is offering her to the highest bidder when she meets Des Grieux and falls in love. They elope to Paris\, but when Monsieur G.M. offers Manon a life of luxury as his mistress she can’t resist. With the Lescauts’ encouragement Des Grieux cheats at cards in an attempt to win Monsieur G.M.’s fortune. They are caught. Manon is arrested as a prostitute and deported to New Orleans\, followed by Des Grieux. On the run\, Manon dies from exhaustion. \nKenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. The premiere was given on March 7\, 1974\, with the lead roles danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory\, and a touchstone of adult\, dramatic dance. \nMacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this\, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid\, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story\, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas. \nCast Information: \nMANON – Sarah Lamb\nDES GRIEUX – Vadim Muntagirov\nLESCAUT – Ryoichi Hirano\nMONSIEUR G.M. – Gary Avis\nLESCAUT’S MISTRESS – Itziar Mendizabal\nMADAME – Kristen McNally\nTHE GAOLER – Thomas Whitehead\nBEGGAR CHIEF – James Hay \nRuntime: approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes\, including an on-screen introduction and two intermissions. Beer\, wine\, popcorn\, and snacks will be available for purchase\, and may be taken into the theater. Outside food and beverages are not allowed. \nCONTENT ADVISORY: Manon contains scenes of an adult nature\, including sexual violence. \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500. For group ticket sales\, please call 509-876-1662. \nInvite your friends and let them know you are going on Facebook! \n# # # \nWant to receive early notice and access to ticket sales? SUMMARY:Live Cinema: "Carmen" - Royal Opera
DESCRIPTION:The Live Cinema Series continues with a screening of the current production of Carmen by The Royal Opera on Wednesday\, April 11 at 6:00 p.m\, and again on Sunday\, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. This production is filmed live in London and rebroadcast internationally to select screens. \n \nCarmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet\, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song” have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera’s heady combination of passion\, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage\, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after\, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone. \nCarmen is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José\, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties\, yet loses Carmen’s love to the glamorous matador Escamillo\, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. \nThis ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production\, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors\, whose Royal Opera debut with Shostakovich’s The Nose in 2016 was greeted with delight. For Carmen he has devised a far-from-traditional version\, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard\, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character. \nFor this production\, Jakub Hrůša conducts the following cast: \nMORALÈS – Gyula Nagy\nMICAËLA – Kristina Mkhitaryan\nDON JOSÉ – Francesco Meli\nZUNIGA – David Soar\nCARMEN – Anna Goryachova\nFRASQUITA – Jacquelyn Stucker\nMERCÉDÈS – Aigul Akhmetshina\nESCAMILLO – Kostas Smoriginas\nDANCAÏRO – Pierre Doyen\nREMENDADO – Jean-Paul Fouchécourt\nVOICE OF CARMEN – Claude de Demo \n \nThis screening runs approximately 3 hours 50 minutes including one intermission and an onscreen introduction. \nNOTE: Carmen is sung in French with English surtitles.  \nReserved seating tickets ($15 Adults\, $10 Students/Youth) are available online or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.
